Instagram CEO admits: platform pushes too many videos to users

Meta has been shifting the focus of Instagram, which started as a photo-sharing app, to compete with short-form video apps like TikTok for the past few years, according to 9to5Mac.

After undoing design changes that made the app more like TikTok, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri admitted that the platform was pushing “too many videos” to users.

The Instagram chief acknowledged that many photographers were unhappy with the way Instagram has been focusing on video, but “photos will always be a part of Instagram.

Mosseri noted that Instagram “overfocused” on video last year and that the platform will now rebalance the number of photos and videos shown to users. Instagram will consider how often a person likes and comments on photos and videos to determine which content appears first in their stream.

In addition, Instagram will continue to invest in video, as this content has driven higher overall engagement, but Instagram will not remove photos from the app. Instagram also recently announced that it will no longer push the shopping feature on the app’s homepage.
