Industry insiders: Why iPhone 14 series still using the old A15 chip?

This year’s iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus not only look the same as the iPhone 13 but also have almost the same performance. Both models are equipped with last year’s full-blooded A15 chip, while the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max have been upgraded to the A16 chip. Today, industry insider “Mobile Chip Man” posted an article saying that one of Apple’s strategies is to reduce costs, in addition to the weakness of Android phones, as to why two of the iPhone 14 models are using the old processor.

He mentioned the Apple Studio Display display, which comes with the same A13 chip as the iPhone 11 series. He pointed out that the A13 in the Studio Display is not a normal A13 processor, it is an A13 (not bin1) that is beaten down in the back end of the test sub-bin, which has poorer performance, and without the Studio Display, these non-bin1 A13s just end up being outright scrapped.

It is reported that Apple has neutered several versions of the A15 chip in the last year. The iPhone 13 comes with a “bloodied” version of the A15 that has one less GPU core than the iPhone 13 Pro’s “full-blooded” version of the A15, which has slightly fewer graphics processing performance. The full-blooded A15 on the iPhone 14 has one less GPU core than the full-blooded A15 on the iPhone 13 Pro.

The full-blooded A15 on the iPhone 14 is identical to last year’s, with the exception of a slight improvement in graphics performance.

It’s worth noting that Apple said at the launch event that its competitors are still chasing the performance of its three-year-old A13 processor and that Apple is way ahead of the curve when it comes to mobile processor performance.
