Gurman: Apple will use a simpler Siri trigger voice assistant, instead of Hey Siri

Bloomberg- Apple is developing a newer Siri experience that no longer requires the “Hey Siri” trigger phrase to invoke the digital voice assistant, according to a report by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.

In its latest Power On newsletter, Gurman said Apple is working on a way for Siri to understand phrases and commands without using the “Hey Siri” trigger phrase, which would simply say “Siri. The change is expected to be introduced sometime in 2023 or 2024, Gurman said.

“Apple is making a move to drop the “Hey trigger phrase” so that users can just say “Siri” – along with the together with the command. While this may seem like a small change, making the switch is a technical challenge that requires a lot of AI training and basic engineering work.”

The complexity involves Siri’s ability to understand the singular phrase “Siri” in many different accents and dialects. Currently, two words, “Hey Siri,” increase the likelihood that the system will receive the signal correctly.

Gurman also reported today that Apple is working to further integrate Siri into third-party services and apps to provide users with more context and assistance.
