Google Tensor second generation processor will use Samsung’s 4nm fabrication process

With the Pixel 6 series, the Mountain View company made a total switch to the Google Tensor processor. Some strong selling points of this processor are its AI capabilities and image processing. Samsung will handle the manufacturing process of the second generation Tensor processor to be in use on the Pixel 7 series.

Mass production of this processor will kick off this month. The Tensor processor in the making will power the Pixel 7 series. We already know what the devices in this series will look like since Google’s show off at the I/O event this year

This wouldn’t be Samsung’s first time manufacturing a processor for Google Pixel devices. The first Tensor processor with the codename Whitechapel made use of Samsung’s 5nm fabrication process. Therefore, Samsung Electronic’s will be taking its second shot at making a processor with Google’s design. This time around, we will see a 4nm fabrication process on the Google Tensor second generation, there will also be some notable upgrades.

With regards to upgrades, we already know that the Apple A16 Bionic chips will stick to a 5nm process. The main reason for this move from Apple is the little changes between the 4nm and 5nm fabrication processes. Why didn’t Google follow Apple’s trend and drop off using a 4nm fabrication process?
