Google Pixel 9 series expected to support emergency satellite communications

According to the Android Authority website, Google insiders revealed that the modem of the Pixel 9 series phones has been upgraded, which includes satellite connection capabilities.

According to reports, modem issues have plagued the Pixel series of phones since Google switched to its semi-custom Tensor chips in 2021. Since the chips were developed in partnership with Samsung’s S.LSI division, Google chose to use Exynos modems to simplify development. However, as the new platform matures, it becomes less of an issue.

The Pixel 9 series will be equipped with Tensor G4 for the first time, bringing a new modem – Samsung Modem 5400, which supports 5G non-terrestrial network (NTN: Non-Terrestrial Network), which is satellite-based communication.

The modem will be used in all cellular-enabled Tensor G4 devices, including the Pixel 9 series and the next-generation Pixel Fold. The source also revealed that Google is in the early stages of developing a 5G tablet codenamed “clementine” that has the same modem.

The appearance renderings of Google Pixel 9 have been exposed before. The phone adopts a right-angled frame design, which looks tougher than the rounded body in the past, and the rear camera module will be more prominent.
