Google merges AI chip team into cloud computing unit to catch up with Microsoft and Amazon

According to information obtained by The Information, a Google spokesperson confirmed that the company has transferred the engineering team responsible for manufacturing AI chips to Google Cloud Computing, a move that may make the cloud department more important to enterprises. It is more competitive with its bigger rivals Microsoft and Amazon Web Services in selling artificial intelligence software.

The move is the latest sign of Google’s efforts to catch up with Microsoft and OpenAI, which successfully launched the ChatGPT chatbot and incorporated it into Microsoft’s Bing search engine, threatening to erode Google’s longstanding search dominance, the report said.

Google has also merged its two artificial intelligence research labs, DeepMind and Google Brain, to accelerate its artificial intelligence work.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said: “Combining all of this talent into one dedicated team, backed by Google’s computing resources, will greatly accelerate our progress in AI. ‘Boldly and responsibly developing general AI'”.
