The Raspberry Pi 4 has been popular since its launch in 2019, but Fedora has not officially supported this Arm single-board computer through its Linux distribution. But now, since upstream open-source graphics acceleration is finally compatible with the Raspberry Pi 4, Fedora 37 may finally offer official support for the popular, low-cost development board in the true sense of the word.
Raspberry Pi 4 has met the needs of servers and IoT with Fedora Arm but has not been a major working target for Fedora workstations (desktops) on Raspberry Pi 4, as the lack of accelerated graphics support and other non-upstream features have been a barrier for them at the time. But now, with the arrival of the upstream kernel and Mesa for the Raspberry Pi 4, and other upstream improvements to handle this low-cost Arm SBC, the Fedora community is beginning to form a pending proposal for a change to “officially support the Raspberry Pi 4”.
The purpose of this proposed change is to provide more “official” support for Fedora Linux on the Raspberry Pi 4B/400/CM4 hardware. Improvements to the upstream open-source graphics drivers give good support for both OpenGL (ES) and Vulkan, and wired networking is getting better (on the wireless side, the Raspberry Pi has just released a new version with 802.11n support).
