European Data Protection Board forms ChatGPT task force to develop common policy on regulating AI

The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) said that it had set up a ChatGPT task force, which could be an important step towards developing a common policy for artificial intelligence privacy rules in Europe.

Before the EDPB set up a task force, Italy had already moved to restrict ChatGPT last month. Germany’s data protection commissioner has also indicated possible restrictions on ChatGPT. The Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) said that it will launch a preliminary investigation into a possible data breach caused by ChatGPT.

Since its launch in November last year, the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT has gained a lot of attention for its ability to quickly respond to user questions with generative answers, thus becoming the fastest-growing consumer application in history, with monthly active users breaking through soon 100000000. At the same time, people began to question that ChatGPT may threaten security, privacy and employment.

Industry experts, the U.S. government and many European governments have also expressed concern about the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence products such as ChatGPT.

“EDPB members discussed the recent enforcement actions taken by Italian data protection authorities against OpenAI over the ChatGPT service,” the EDPB said in a statement on Thursday. law enforcement operations to exchange information.”

A source at a government watchdog said EU member states wanted to adjust their policies, but that would take time.

The source said the aim of the EU member states was not to punish OpenAI or create rules that could affect it, but to introduce a “transparent” general policy.

Participants at Thursday’s meeting, which included policy experts on artificial intelligence and no policymakers, presented and exchanged views, the people said.

It is reported that EDPB is an independent institution, which is mainly responsible for supervising data protection rules within the EU, and is composed of data protection supervisory agencies in European countries.

Discussion of the ChatGPT issue was put on the agenda of the EDPB following Spain’s application earlier this week to discuss the ChatGPT issue.
