Counterpoint today released a report saying that in the fourth quarter of 2022, global PC shipments fell 27.8% year-over-year to 65.2 million units, hitting a record low.

The report notes that inventory levels at several OEMs and ODMs may have peaked in the third quarter of 2022, but the year-end shopping season also failed to drive PC shipments in the fourth quarter. 286 million PCs were shipped in 2022, further confirming the lack of demand in the global PC market, with shipments falling year-over-year for four consecutive quarters. The first half of 2023 is not expected to see a significant rebound.

Counterpoint said that in 2022, macroeconomic headwinds, and rising inflationary pressures, coupled with the cold demand in the PC market, are affecting the global PC market, and shipments fell 15% year-on-year.

  • Lenovo (Lenovo) in the fourth quarter of 2022 maintained a market share at 23.7%; its shipments in 2022 fell 17% year-on-year, with a market share of 23.7%.
  • Hewlett-Packard (HP) had a 20.3 percent market share in the fourth quarter of 2022, with shipments down 29 percent year-over-year; HP shipments fell back the most in 2022, ending up with less than 20 percent market share.
  • Dell’s (Dell) market share of 16.7 percent fell to its lowest point in the past seven quarters, primarily due to slowing enterprise demand.
  • Apple ended the year with a flat shipment performance after a slight 3 percent year-over-year decline in shipments in the fourth quarter of 2022.
