Capcom announces development of next-gen RE game engine, codenamed REX

Capcom announced that it is developing the next generation version of the RE engine, codenamed REX.

According to a presentation posted by Capcom on its official development channel, in a section titled “The Future of the RE Engine,” the presentation delves into some of the challenges facing the game engine, including the need for a high degree of customization for each game. Capcom’s solution was to develop a “new engine standard” and call it REX.

According to reports, the REX engine will include all the previous functions of the RE engine, while adding support for new technologies and handling the growing asset size more efficiently.

“Dragon’s Dogma 2” will be the next game to use RE engine technology, and IGN also said that the new “Monster Hunter” game will also be launched in 2024.

It is learned that the development of the RE engine began in 2014 and finally made its debut in 2017’s “Resident Evil 7”. Considering that more and more developers rely on mature solutions such as Unreal Engine, Capcom’s self-built RE engine is an unusual move, but it does have good results. Several recent Capcom games are being optimized. All performed well.
