Broadcom proposes antitrust pledge to EU to facilitate $61 billion VMware acquisition

According to Reuters, in order to appease concerns that the VMware acquisition may affect market competition, Broadcom has submitted an antitrust commitment to the European Commission.

Sources pointed out that Broadcom proposed remedial measures related to the impact of the acquisition of VMware. Broadcom’s review period for VMware’s acquisition of VMware has been extended to July 17, 2023, according to a European Commission document showing that Broadcom made antitrust commitments on May 16, 2023, without providing further details on Broadcom’s commitments.

Previously, the European Commission rarely revealed in April that it had issued a statement of objection to Broadcom, warning that Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware may have adverse effects on enterprise customers such as price increases, service quality declines, and stifling innovation.

The European Commission is concerned that after Broadcom acquires VMware, it may act to hinder market competition for hardware components from other vendors that can work with VMware virtualization software. It was previously reported that Broadcom faced an EU antitrust warning for its $61 billion acquisition of VMware.
