Apple to make iPads in India soon, incentives increase to Rs. 170 billion

According to foreign technology, media 9to5Mac reported that the Indian government approved on Wednesday a financial incentive that Apple will soon produce iPads in the Indian market.

The purpose of this financial incentive is to promote local manufacturing and export of IT products such as laptops, tablets, personal computers and servers. The policy is open to all Indian manufacturers, but Apple is clearly the biggest beneficiary.

Industry body the Indian Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) released data in April showing that India’s smartphone exports exceeded $11.2 billion in the fiscal year ending March this year, with Apple’s exports estimated at between $5-5.5 billion, or nearly half.

After the huge success of the iPhone, the Indian government has turned its attention to incentives for tablet and laptop production, with Apple once again the main target.

The Indian government approved a 73.5 billion rupee (currently about RMB 6.239 billion) plan in 2021 to introduce a smartphone-like “cash back” offer, which Apple reportedly rejected, arguing that previous policy incentives were insufficient to cover the cost of producing iPads in India. Apple has asked to nearly triple the incentive to 200 billion rupees.

According to Bloomberg, Apple has largely succeeded, with the Indian government agreeing to increase the incentive program to 170 billion rupees (currently about RMB 14.430 billion) to attract laptop, tablet and other hardware makers to India.
