TSMC has the mandate to manufacture the Apple M2 Pro and M3 flagship processors. This will be the 3nm process and mass production of chips with this fabrication process will kick off in H2 2022. Meaning that the new 3nm processors from Apple are around the corner.
These processors aren’t necessarily mobile processors, but one might feature on a coming iPad. The main devices where these processors will show off their abilities are MacBooks and Macs. A few speculations are already available concerning the devices that’ll use these coming processors.
Via one of his latest power on newsletters, Mark Gurman gave his expectations as to the devices each of these processors will power. Starting with the Apple M2 Pro processor, he speculates that it’d feature on the 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro. But he didn’t stop with only the MacBooks, he further went on to lay hopes that the M2 Pro will power the high-end Mac mini.
For the M3 processor, which might be more capable than the latter, his expectations were not high. A coming 13-inch MacBook Air, 15-inch MacBook Air, iMac and a 12-inch MacBook made his list. Since the M3 processor will be coming with the MacBook Air models, it might be less capable than the M2 Pro.
All devices from Mark Gurman’s newsletter aren’t yet official, and so are the processors. But we expect these coming processors from Apple to be ready by the end of the year or early next year. Both processors will have major improvements in performance as against the currently available M2 processor.
