Apple confirmed today that the Live Activity Lock Screen feature will be available when iOS 16.1 launches, Apple shared this information with developers and said that the ActivityKit API is available so developers can start incorporating live activity into their apps starting now.

Real-time activity is keeping up-to-date with interactive notifications that allow users to follow what’s happening in real-time right on the lock screen. For example, if one is following a sports game, one can see the latest score on the lock screen, or if one is waiting for an Uber service, one can watch the driver’s approach through the progress bar.

Users will be able to follow live activity on the lock screen, and iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max users will even be able to see live activity in the newly introduced Dynamic Island area.

Apple said apps with real-time activity will be able to be submitted to the App Store when the iOS 16.1 release candidate is made available to developers.

For now, developers can test the feature using TestFlight.
