Apple today announced statistics for iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 install rates, the first time Apple has provided this data since the system update was introduced last year.

The data shows how many iPhones and iPads are running iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, as measured by devices transacted on the App Store on February 14. iOS 16 is compatible with iPhone 8 and newer models, while iPadOS 16 is compatible with all iPad Pro and some iPad Air, iPad mini and entry-level iPad models released since 2017. iPad mini and entry-level iPad models.

Apple’s website says iOS 16 is installed on 72 percent of iPhones and 81 percent of iPhones launched in the last four years. According to Apple, 20 percent of iPhones are still running iOS 15, while 8 percent of iPhones are running iOS 14 or earlier.

Adoption of iPadOS 16 is 50 percent overall and 53 percent across all iPad models introduced in the last four years, according to Apple. Adoption of iPadOS 15 remains fairly high at 35 percent across all compatible iPad models, while 13 percent are still running iPadOS 14 or earlier.

Apple shared the first iOS 15 install rate statistics in January 2022, while this iOS 16 data was released in February, so the timing difference does not allow for direct comparison. Broadly speaking, however, the adoption of iOS 16 is similar to that of iOS 15.
