Apple’s artificial intelligence summit wasn’t as groundbreaking as expected; it was more of a reunion event to bring teams together without any transformative product technology announcements, according to a report.
February’s AI Summit was the first time in years that Apple held such a large gathering on its Apple Park campus, and while the event may have been an opportunity for Apple to regain attention, Apple chose to keep a low profile.
The summit did discuss machine learning and Apple’s internal AI progress, according to the latest edition of Mark Gurman’s “Power On” newsletter for Bloomberg. In a brochure for the event, Apple’s head of artificial intelligence commented, “Machine learning is moving faster than ever, and the talent we have here is really at the forefront.”
Despite this assertion, Gurman claimed that he hadn’t heard anything at all about what the summit might bring that would be “game-changing” for consumers.
With ChatGPT and Google Bard dominating the headlines, Apple could have used the event to showcase the results of its employees internally. But apparently not, as Gurman believes Apple didn’t showcase any sort of competitor to the aforementioned chatbots at the event, or anything related to the field.
While the event didn’t seem to make any waves in terms of artificial intelligence, it did at least show that Apple is making an effort to hold offline events again after a hiatus of several years. This could be thought of as a trial run before holding other large public-facing events, such as WWDC in the summer or offline now-media events for product launches.
