Xiaomi 12S Ultra Review: 2022 Smartphone Photography Standard

Description

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra is best described as a camera with some smartphones. I heard that somewhere. Not only because of the 1-inch camera but the design, which went above and beyond to highlight this point. Even the webpage dedicated to this phone dedicated a huge portion to talking about the camera.

When you see the phone for the first time, the first thing you will notice is the protruding round camera bump. It is so pronounced that the phone inclines like a keyboard when you place it on a flat surface. Its predecessor, the Mi 11 Ultra, also made a statement with its camera island design, so I guess it runs in the family.

In fact, the camera bump on the 12S ultra is in two layers, a square island with the “LEICA” logo and the aforementioned round protrusion on which the cameras sit. The rounded portion has a gold ring wrapped around it to accentuate the rounded portion, which also does wonders for the overall aesthetics.

Moving onto other parts, the rest of the back is covered with a faux-leather finish, which is a delight in the palm. It is the softest and most pleasant feeling I have had from holding a phone.  It almost felt like a crime to cover it up with the case. Naturally, it doesn’t leave any fingerprints. On the bottom left is the Xiaomi brand name.

The 12S Ultra frame which is made of aluminum is square and round on all four corners  On the right side of the frame, you will find the volume rocker and the power button.

A journey to the bottom of the 12S Ultra will reveal the type-C charging port, a microphone, a dual nano SIM slot, and one of the two Harman/Kardon stereo speakers. The left side is free of any buttons or any other things for that matter.

Finally, at the top, you will find the second Harman/Kardon speaker, the IR blaster, and another microphone.

Flipping the phone around, you will come face to face with a 6.73” 120Hz LTPO2 AMOLED display, which covers most of the front with a small room for the ting bezels on the sides and a slightly bigger chin. Unlike in the 11th generation, the selfie camera on the 12S Ultra has been moved from the left to the middle. I will go into more detail on the display response in the display section.

The 12S Ultra’s dimensions measure 163.2mm high, 74.97mm wide, and round out at a thickness of 9.06mm. The 12S Ultra is not a small phone, but at 225g, it is very handy and feels light in my hand (my hands are big).
