Windows 11 disables TLS 1.0/1.1 by default since September preview and subsequent updates

Microsoft project manager Jess Krynitsky published a blog post today, announcing that starting from the Win11 preview version released in September 2023 and subsequent Windows system versions, support for TLS 1.0/1.1 will be disabled by default.

Microsoft says that TLS versions 1.0 and 1.1 date back to 1999 and 2006, respectively, and as a result have seen a very large number of vulnerabilities over the past few years.

Microsoft has added support for TLS 1.2 since Win8 and TLS 1.3 in Win11.

Microsoft’s official press release is as follows:

  • Internet standards and regulatory bodies have deprecated or banned TLS versions 1.0 and 1.1 over the past few years due to various security concerns.
  • We have been tracking the use of the TLS protocol for many years and have now confirmed that the usage figures for TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 are low enough to take action.
  • Beginning with the September 2023 release of Win11 Preview and subsequent versions of Windows, TLS 1.0/1.1 will be disabled by default to help encourage users to use more secure, modern protocols.
