According to a list of changes submitted by Microsoft in Chromium Gerrit, a “small code tweak” will enable Mica materials for Chromium-based browsers on Win11 Version 22H2.

Effect of enabling Mica Alt (lighter)

Enable the effect of Mica Alt (darker)

The list as follows:

This CL demonstrates "minimal code tweaking" to enable Mica.

The Alt title bar material in Chromium will use the DWMWA_SYSTEMBACKDROP_TYPE DWM property in Windows 11 22H2.

Users can enable this with the --disable-windows10-custom-titlebar CLI command.

This CL is for demonstration purposes only and is required to run on Win11 22H2 and higher, using the dark color mode and the default Chromium color scheme.

Mica is an opaque, dynamic material that contains themes and desktop wallpapers for drawing the background of long-term windows such as applications and settings.

Mica is specifically designed to optimize the performance of applications by sampling the desktop wallpaper only once to create its visualization.

Mica Alt is a variant of Mica with stronger coloring of the user’s desktop background color. Mica Alt can be applied to the background of an application to provide a deeper visual hierarchy than Mica, especially when creating applications with tabbed title bars.
