Western Digital promises firmware update for failed SanDisk Extreme mobile drives

Over the past few months, it’s been common to see users on major forums and social platforms like Twitter complaining about bugs on their recently purchased 4TB and 2TB SanDisk Extreme V2 and Extreme Pro V2 drives, such as suddenly erasing their original data or even becoming unreadable in some cases.

However, the issue appears to be limited to drives manufactured sometime in late 2022 and appears to primarily affect 4TB models. Western Digital told ArsTechnica that they will be releasing a new firmware update to address reliability issues with their SanDisk Extreme and Extreme Pro SSDs.

“Western Digital is aware of reports that some customers are experiencing issues with the 4TB SanDisk Extreme and/or Extreme Pro mobile drives (SDSSDE61-4T00 and SDSSDE81-4T00, respectively).” “We have resolved the issue and will be releasing a firmware update on our website soon. Customers with questions or experiencing issues should contact our customer support team for assistance.”

Western Digital did not say when it would make this update available, however, or whether it was also working on a fix for the 2TB model. In addition, the company did not respond to whether it would provide compensation to customers who lost data. We expect the new firmware update to arrive soon.
