Video conversion tool HandBrake 1.6 released: supports AV1 and VP9 10-bit video encoding

In addition to fixing many bugs in previous versions, the most notable new feature is the support for video encoding with AV1 and 10-bit VP9 codecs.

The original intention of HandBrake software is to rip DVD content, convert existing video clips into videos that can be watched on platforms such as iOS, and reduce the space occupied by video files through compression algorithms. HandBrake software is a free, cross-platform open source video conversion tool that can run on macOS, Windows and Linux platforms.

In the version 1.6.0 update, the video conversion tool supports AV1, VP9 10-bit, NVENC HEVC 10-bit and VCN HEVC 10-bit video encoding. The update also adds high bit-depth and color-depth support for various encoders and filters, as well as introduces new 4K AV1 and 4K HEVC presets.

Owners of Apple Silicon Macs can now use the VideoToolbox encoder’s 4:2:2 H.265 profile. The new version of the app also supports Intel Deep Link Hypercoding to improve performance when using multiple QSV media engines on Intel-based computers. But there’s more. HandBrake now works with OpenBSD, while the Mac version supports Quick Look and offers localization improvements such as Japanese.
