Universal car owners using iPhone 15 also encountered wireless charging issues

Apple may have fixed iPhone 15 wireless charging issues in BMW cars, but now General Motors says it’s investigating complaints about similar issues. Numerous iPhone 15 owners on Reddit, Apple’s website, and Chevrolet forums say they can no longer charge their phones properly in Chevrolet, Cadillac, and Buick vehicles.

One user on the General Motors Truck Forum said their iPhone 15 Pro Max worked “flawlessly” on a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 High Country until they updated the device to iOS 17.1. After the update, their phone only charges for about “5 to 10 seconds” and then stops charging.

Other iPhone 15 users have had the same complaint on several vehicles made by General Motors, including the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV, 2023 Chevrolet Traverse, 2024 Buick Encore GX Avenir, and Cadillac XT6, among others. Most users are finding difficulty charging their iPhone 15 after updating it to iOS 17.1. At the same time, users said that models such as iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 15 that have not been updated to iOS 17.1 can still charge normally in the car.

“My iPhone 12 Pro Max works perfectly (every time) in my 23 Chevy Traverse,” one user said on Reddit. “About 6 weeks ago I switched to an iPhone 15 Pro Max and it just worked like other reviews described: it stopped charging after a few seconds and opening or closing the case had the same result.”

“We are aware of this issue and are investigating,” GM spokesman Stu Fowle said in a statement. “We have nothing to confirm at this time.”

This issue is somewhat different from the one affecting BMW’s iPhone 15. In this case, users discovered that wirelessly charging their iPhone 15 in a BMW disabled the NFC chip inside the phone, preventing them from using Apple Pay and BMW’s Digital Key feature. Apple fixed this issue in an update in iOS 17.1.1, but unfortunately, it appears there’s another charging issue Apple needs to address.
