Although TSMC has not announced specific European investment plans, it has previously revealed that it is in contact with customers and partners in Europe to assess the possibility of building factories in Europe based on customer needs and government support levels.

According to equipment and production chain industry sources, TSMC seems to be preparing to set up a factory in Dresden, the German semiconductor city.

According to Taiwan’s “Business Times”, TSMC Telex has chosen to set up a factory in Dresden, and it is expected to start production in 2025, in response to strong local demand for mature special processes in Europe. TSMC expects that in five years, overseas production capacity will account for more than 20% of 28nm and more advanced processes.

Dresden currently has a complete semiconductor production chain and supply ecosystem, and TSMC can also obtain EU subsidies to build a factory here, and is closer to customers.

According to public information, Dresden is the largest semiconductor center in Europe, including Infineon, Bosch, GlobalFoundries, X-Fab, NXP and other companies have established fabs, and Applied Materials, ASML, Shichuang Electronic Materials (Siltronic) also has complete local support, and the number of semiconductor-related jobs alone has reached more than 50,000.

Due to global geopolitical risks, TSMC has continued to carry out global investment layout in recent years. At present, it has finalized investment plans for the United States and Japan. It was also reported that the governments of Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and India hoped to win Taiwanese wafer foundries to the local area. Investment, but there is still no specific investment plan finalized by any manufacturer.

TSMC has also previously emphasized that they will continue to expand production capacity in Taiwan. Among them, 3nm technology has achieved mass production at the end of last year, and is currently preparing for 2nm, which will start mass production in 2025.
