TSMC’s 3nm process, first installed in the iPhone 16 series

According to Taiwan’s Business Times, the 5G modem chip, which Apple has invested a lot of resources in developing, is expected to be introduced into the iPhone 16 series of phones next year ahead of schedule.

The company’s supply chain is expected to introduce its own 5G modem chip to the iPhone 16 series as early as next year.

Taiwan media pointed out that supply chain vendors said Apple’s homemade 5G modem chip, codenamed Ibiza, will use TSMC’s 3nm process, and the supporting RF IC will use TSMC’s 7nm process, which is expected to be introduced into Apple’s iPhone 16 series phones in 2024.

According to this projection, TSMC will start trial production for Apple in the second half of this year at the earliest, and gradually increase the number of chips invested in the first half of next year.

In addition, Apple’s iPhone 14, which was launched in the second half of last year, is equipped with Qualcomm’s 5G modem chip X65, which is produced using Samsung’s 4nm process; the iPhone 15, which will be launched in the second half of this year, will be equipped with Qualcomm’s new generation 5G modem chip X70, which is expected to use TSMC’s 4nm process.
