TSMC’s 2nm fab plans may be delayed as advanced process advancement is hampered

The Taiwan Economic Daily News reported that the Central Taiwan Science and Technology Administration yesterday revealed that, the Taichung City Government urban planning review was delayed, coupled with the new director of all development not yet been inaugurated, TSMC next-generation 2nm Central Taiwan Science and Technology new plant land acquisition schedule may be delayed from the original May next year to the third quarter, affecting TSMC advanced process to promote the pace. The company is worried that once TSMC’s new 2nm fab site is not available as scheduled, the subsequent 2nm production schedule may also be affected.

The second phase of the expansion plan of Taiwan’s Central Taiwan Science and Technology Taichung Park passed the environmental assessment panel review on the 5th of this month, the Central Taiwan Science and Technology Administration originally planned to strive to hand over the land for TSMC to build a new 2nm factory in May next year. TSMC is planning two phases and four fabs, with construction starting next year and the first 2nm process going into production by the end of 2024 at the earliest, with a total investment of NT$800 billion to NT$1 trillion.

According to TSMC’s information, the 2nm process will increase speed by 10% to 15% under the same power, or reduce power consumption by 25% to 30% under the same speed, compared to N3E. As for the more advanced 1nm process, TSMC has not yet announced the mass production schedule.
