Toyota plans to produce up to 10.6 million vehicles by 2023

Toyota Motor Corp. said today that it is “working to achieve the production ceiling of 10.6 million units in 2023. The company said the figure is a “baseline production” with a downside risk of about 10 percent, and said the impact of shortages in the supply of components such as semiconductors is not yet clear.

On Friday, Toyota unveiled two purely electric and hydrogen-powered concepts that revamp classic models at the Tokyo Motor Show in Japan. The company is planning to launch a dedicated platform for the mass production of electric vehicles. Toyota President Akio Toyoda said that profitability through electric vehicles is difficult but necessary.

The company is considering a general-purpose platform that can build a variety of electric cars, completely different from the platform used to produce electric cars today, said Akio Toyoda.

Toyota will sell 1,940,600 new vehicles in China in 2022, down 0.2 percent from the previous year. This is the first year-over-year decline in a decade since 2012. Toyota’s December last year was down 19.8% year-on-year, two consecutive months of decline.

For GAC Toyota, total production in 2022 will be 1,009,265 vehicles, up 22.6% year-over-year, and total sales will be 1,005,000 vehicles, up 21.4% year-over-year. FAW Toyota’s full-year production in 2022 exceeds 832,201 vehicles.

In addition, Toyota has recently made efforts to accelerate its new energy transformation in the Chinese market. 20 December 2022, the second phase of GAC Toyota’s new energy vehicle production capacity expansion project was officially put into operation in Nansha District, Guangzhou City, marking GAC Toyota’s official production capacity of one million units, and GAC Toyota will accelerate the implementation of its all-round electrification strategy.
