Tesla is now releasing its fourth quarter 2022 safety report. Compared to the previous quarter, Tesla Autopilot saw a decrease in miles between accidents in the fourth quarter of 2022, but an improvement compared to the fourth quarter of 2021.

According to Tesla’s records, users of Autopilot technology averaged one crash every 4.85 million miles (approximately 7.853 million kilometers) in the fourth quarter, while for drivers not using Autopilot technology, Tesla recorded one crash every 1.4 million miles.

By comparison, recent data from NHTSA and the FHWA (from 2021) show that a crash occurs approximately every 652,000 miles in the United States.

While this data suggests that Autopilot is effective in reducing crash rates, a side-by-side comparison shows that Tesla’s figure dropped from 6.26 million miles in the third quarter to 4.85 million miles, indicating that Tesla owners were in more frequent crashes during the fourth quarter.
