According to Reuters, a person familiar with the matter said that electric car maker Tesla Inc on Wednesday proposed to Indian government officials plans to build an electric car factory in India, aiming to make electric vehicles. For domestic sales and export in the country. Tesla declined to comment.

The source said that Tesla has not discussed with the Indian government the issue of reducing import duties on electric vehicles. Reuters reported on Tuesday that senior Tesla executives met with government officials in India this week to discuss issues including local sourcing of components.

It is noticed that Tesla’s renewed interest in the Indian market came nearly a year after it abandoned plans to sell cars in the country. Having failed to secure lower import taxes, the company’s chief executive, Elon Musk, has said India’s import taxes are among the highest in the world. Local sourcing is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Make in India” campaign to attract manufacturers, especially as companies seek to diversify their supply chains.
