In December 2022, the Tesla Model Y will become the best-selling car in the UK, while the Model 3 will become the second best-selling car in the country.

Although 2022 has been challenging for Tesla, the company’s sales in the UK have been strong last year, with its Model 3 and Model Y being the best-selling vehicles in different months several times.

Statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that in December 2022, Model Y sales in the UK will be 10,664, ranking first. The Model Y was followed by the Model 3 with 5,704 sales. In third place was the Nissan Qashqai, an affordable compact hatchback, with 3,506 sales, a third of Model Y sales.

With 35,551 sales in the UK for all of 2022, the Model Y is the third best-selling car in the country, trailing only the Nissan Qashqai (42,704) and the Vauxhall Corsa (35,910).

Foreign media said that Tesla’s strong sales showed the overall trend of the British car market. In 2022, registrations of gasoline-powered cars will fall by 10.4% and those of diesel-powered cars by 38.9%, compared with a 40.1% increase in registrations of pure electric vehicles.

The SMMT tally also showed that the UK new car market rose for the fifth consecutive month in December 2022, growing by 18.3% with 128,462 new car registrations. Despite underlying demand, total new vehicle registrations fell 2% to 1.61 million in 2022.
