Tesla keeps Shanghai factory at 93% capacity

Despite recent upgrades to Tesla’s Shanghai plant, the company reportedly plans to keep it at about 93 percent of capacity by the end of the year. This is a rare move for Tesla. The Shanghai plant has been operating at essentially full capacity since it opened in 2019. Tesla also recently increased its weekly production by 30 percent to a maximum of 22,000 vehicles.

The upgraded Shanghai plant can produce 14,000 Model Ys and 8,000 Model 3s a week, people familiar with the matter said, but for the remaining months of the year, Tesla plans to produce 20,500 cars a week, including 13,000 Model Ys and 7,500 Model 3s.

In the first eight months of this year, 60 percent of the electric cars produced at Tesla’s Shanghai plant were sold domestically in China, with the rest exported to overseas markets such as Australia, Europe, Japan and Singapore.
