Tesla invests another $1 billion in 4680 batteries and Semi electric heavy-duty truck

Tesla Inc. said Tuesday it has increased its capital spending plans by $1 billion (currently about RMB 6.75 billion) for next year. The company is now looking to increase the production of 4680 cells for electric car batteries and Semi heavy-duty trucks.

Tesla said in a regulatory filing that it expects to spend $7 billion to $9 billion in 2024 and 2025, up from $6 billion to $8 billion this year. Last year, Tesla said it expected to invest between $6 billion and $8 billion in 2023 and 2024.

Just a few days ago, Tesla announced it would invest $3.6 billion (currently about RMB 24.3 billion) to build two new factories near its existing manufacturing site in Reno, Nevada, to produce 4680 battery cells and Semi trucks. Tesla’s goal is to produce 50,000 Semi trucks by 2024.

Tesla shares fell 1.8 percent in pre-market.
