A week after submitting an application to expand its Texas super factory, Tesla has now submitted a new application to spend $59 million (currently about 397 million RMB) to build a tooling shop inside the Texas super factory, according to foreign media reports.
Tesla said in the application documents that the building will cover an area of more than 107,000 square feet, construction will start on January 30, and it is expected to be completed by February 19, 2024.
The Texas Gigafactory is Tesla’s fifth factory after the Nevada Gigafactory, New York Gigafactory, Shanghai Gigafactory and Berlin Gigafactory, and the fourth automaker after the Fremont, Shanghai and Berlin factories. The assembly plant, currently only produces Model Y.
Elon Musk said that in addition to producing Model Y, the factory will also produce the first Cybertruck electric pickup and Semi electric semi-trailer truck.
Recently, Tesla’s chief designer Franz von Holzhausen said that the design of the Tesla Cybertruck electric pickup has been completed and will be put into production soon.
On January 9, Tesla just submitted an application to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation to expand the Texas Gigafactory. According to the filing, the company plans to spend $717 million on four projects at the facility, covering 1.4 million square feet, that will begin construction later this month and finish early next year.
