TechInsights: Apple adopted Sony’s 48-megapixel CIS for rear wide-angle lens

According to the latest report of Techlnsights, Sony Semiconductor in Japan’s Nagasaki factory production of Apple iPhone 15 series of cameras using advanced image sensor technology, is expected to further increase the demand for Sony CIS shipments to meet Apple’s latest iPhone series of CIS demand.

According to the report, Apple has adopted Sony’s 48-megapixel CIS for the rear wide-angle lens of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro series, boosting Sony’s share of the market in the high-resolution segment above 4800 pixels. Sony’s 48-megapixel IMX803 sensor was first used in last year’s iPhone 14 Pro lineup and is one of the top 20 smartphone CIS image sensor models shipped in the first half of 2023.

Apple has also adopted Sony’s new 12-megapixel IMX913 CIS for the iPhone 15 Pro Max line’s periscope telephoto lens application and has upgraded its LiDAR with Sony’s IMX591.

The report that the smartphone image sensor market is growing at an annual rate of 2%, while Sony Semiconductor grew its market share to 56% in the first half of 2023, and that more than 55% of Sony’s smartphone CIS revenue comes from Apple, which is on track to achieve its goal of $8 billion in smartphone CIS sales this year.

The report also noted that given its strong reliance on Apple, Sony will continue to aggressively drive its CIS portfolio to other leading smartphone OEMs and their key high-end products by offering large format CIS and customized CIS solutions.
