Google announced today that it is testing 2 new generative AI features aimed at improving the YouTube viewing experience. During the test period, these new additions will be accessible to select YouTube users.

New features as follows:

AI Summary Comment Topic

Google is experimenting with using AI to summarize large comment sections of long videos into digestible topics for discussion. Google says creators can use these review snippets to engage in review discussions or inspire new content.

Topics are pulled from published comments and are not created from comments that are pending or contain blocked words. Users participating in the test will see a new option to sort certain videos by topic when opening comments on a mobile device.

Conversational AI tools

The tool lets users get answers to questions about the video they’re watching, recommendations for related content, and more without interrupting playback. For some academic videos, the tool can aid the learning journey by providing quizzes and answers that encourage deeper understanding.

Starting today, the feature is available on select videos for a small group of users, and in the coming weeks, U.S. YouTube Premium members on Android devices will be able to join the experiment.

India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced that its Film Censorship Board has been granted the power to remove pirated movies from platforms such as YouTube. The copyright owner, agent, “and/or any other person” may file a complaint by completing a paper form.

The department added that if the complainant is not the copyright owner or has not authorized the copyright owner, a personal hearing may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

India’s Motion Picture Camera (Amendment) Bill was first proposed in 2019 and aims to update the Motion Picture Camera Act of 1952 to better protect filmmakers. The main goal of these amendments is to reduce rampant online movie piracy, but also includes measures related to film certification.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting first drew attention to Section 6AB of the revised Film Act:

No person shall use or abet the use of an infringing copy of any film for exhibition to the public for profit— (a) at any exhibition place not licensed under this Act or rules made thereunder; (b) under the Copyright Act 1957 or for the time being in force of any other law that constitutes copyright infringement.

“Furthermore, the newly inserted Section 7(1B)(ii) of the Cinematography Act provides that the government may take appropriate action to remove/disable access to such content displayed/hosted on the platform on the grounds of violation of Section 6AB above. Infringing copies,” the announcement added.

In the statement, officials directly mentioned YouTube and Telegram. “Under the revised film law, CBFC’s district officers have the power to issue orders to remove pirated films from any source such as Telegram and YouTube after receiving complaints. Platforms are required to take action within 48 hours and remove illegally reproduced content,” said a officials said.

The statement noted that non-copyright owners can also file complaints, and the same applies to people who remove infringing content without the authorization of the copyright owner.

According to a report by WIRED magazine on Friday local time, YouTube recently announced that it will increase its crackdown on ad blockers globally, resulting in hundreds of thousands of people uninstalling ads. Interceptor.

Hundreds of thousands of users uninstalled their ad blockers in October, reaching “record numbers,” according to ad blocking companies. At the same time, the number of new ad blocker installations is at an all-time high as people look for alternatives that won’t trigger YouTube anti-ad blocking pop-ups.

Several ad blocker providers disclosed more detailed data. One of the blockers, Ghostery, said that in a survey about the reasons for uninstallation, more than 90% of users reported that the tool was broken on YouTube. Meanwhile, users are keen to find viable solutions, leading many to try switching to Microsoft’s Edge browser, with Ghostery installations on Edge jumping 30% last month compared to September. Throughout much of October, the number of uninstalls and installs per day was 3-5 times higher than usual.

AdGuard, another well-known ad blocker, said its tool has about 75 million users, including 4.5 million paid users, and about 6,000 people typically uninstall its extensions from the Chrome browser every day. The company’s chief technology officer, Andrey Meshkov, said that from October 9 to the end of the month, about 11,000 people uninstalled AdGuard every day, with the number of uninstalls soaring to 52,000 in a single day on October 18.

But like Ghostery, AdGuard has seen a surge in installs as users seek alternatives. Between October 18 and 27, AdGuard was installed approximately 60,000 times on Chrome. Subscribers also grew when people realized that AdGuard’s paid tools were (for now) immune to YouTube’s crackdown.

YouTube spokesman Christopher Rowton said that the ad blocker violated the platform’s terms of service, and the company provides a YouTube Premium plan of $13.99 per month for users who want an ad-free experience. “Advertising supports a diverse ecosystem of creators around the world, enabling billions of viewers to access the content they love”.

However, users are not helpless in the face of YouTube’s upgraded anti-ad blocking measures. For example, Twitter user @endermanch posted that there is an easy way to bypass YouTube blocking by simply changing the browser identity (UA) to Windows Phone through an officially created extension.

According to a Bloomberg report, people familiar with the situation revealed that YouTube is developing an AI-driven tool that allows creators to record audio using the voices of a series of “famous musicians.”

In order to achieve this feature, YouTube has approached record labels to obtain the rights to the songs used to train the tool, according to sources. According to reports, no deal has yet been signed by major record labels, although discussions between the parties are continuing. For the music industry, AI holds both great promise and significant threats.

YouTube launched new AI-based tools last month, one of which includes AI-generated dubbing of videos in a language other than their native language. According to reports, the company had hoped to launch this music tool that used AI to “change the voice”, but it stopped because it had not yet obtained the copyright.

According to previous reports, in the first half of this year, a song “Heart On My Sleeve” created using the voice training model of singers Drake and The Weekend became popular on platforms such as TikTok, with more than 8.5 million clicks and views. The complete version has been played more than 216,000 times on YouTube. The song was produced by @ghostwriter, who wrote, “This is just the beginning,” in the YouTube video bio.

Personalized advertising is a powerful propaganda tool. For users, it can improve the relevance of the ads, thus increasing the user click rate; for advertisers, it can improve the return on investment; and this kind of ads often needs to be based on the user’s access to data to achieve the targeting and display to the user with their more relevant advertising content.

Simply put, some websites use trackers to collect information about a user’s browsing, which can be used to improve their service and deliver personalized ads to the user, among other things. However, there are also some trackers that also send the collected information to another website.

In response to this problem, major browsers such as Microsoft Edge offer three tracking protection modes: basic, balanced (default), and strict, with the strict mode blocking most trackers from all sites, making it difficult to personalize many ads, which also leads to the possibility that some sites may not be accessible properly.

A large number of users have reported that Google is blocking them from watching YouTube videos if Microsoft Edge has “Strict” tracking protection mode enabled.

As early as May 2023, there were reports that Google had been testing an anti-ad-blocking experimental feature for YouTube, when it detects that some users are using an ad-blocking program, it will pop-up window to remind the user unless the user disables the ad-blocker or subscribes to YouTube Premium, or else they will not be able to access the site. This user, for example, was alerted by a pop-up that the video player would terminate after 3 videos.

Google has actually been fighting ad blockers for a long time, briefly banning them from the Play Store in early 2016, for example, but reverting back to its original strategy shortly afterwards. But clearly, it didn’t stop there.

More and more YouTube users are starting to see this warning and pop-up as Google gradually strengthens its anti-anti-tracker features, and this time it’s even directly confronting the browser’s optional tracking protection mode.

As we can see from the Google Alert, Google maintains that “ad blockers violate YouTube’s Terms of Service”:

  • You may have activated an ad blocker. You must either allow YouTube or turn off the ad blocker to continue playing the video.
  • Ads allow users around the world to access YouTube.
  • For an ad-free experience, users can opt for YouTube Premium, which ensures that content creators are still paid.

Therefore, users have only two options: allow YouTube ads or purchase a YouTube Premium subscription. But the good thing is that this issue doesn’t affect all users, which suggests that Google is still in grey-scale testing and will hopefully tweak it later.

YouTube announced at today’s creator conference “Made on YouTube” that it will launch a series of AI-driven creator tools. The tools, launching later this year or next, include AI-generated photo and video backgrounds, as well as video topic guidance and suggestion tools, and music search tools.

Summarizes as follows:

Dream Screen: AI can be used to generate videos and photos that creators can use as backgrounds for YouTube shorts and then insert their own content. Initially, creators will be able to enter prompts or commands to generate backgrounds, but YouTube hopes that creators will eventually be able to use AI tools to remix and orchestrate existing content to create new content.

AI Insights (Video Topic Ideas and Outline Generator): This feature will be integrated into the YouTube Studio creator management platform. AI can personalize video topics based on the creator’s personal situation and audience trends.

AI-based music recommendation system: It can recommend appropriate background music or audio based on the creator’s description of the video’s characteristics and key points.

Aloud: Also integrated within YouTube Studio, AI-generated dubbing of videos (other than their native language) in another language with just one click allows creators to pre-check it before adding it to the video. The tool is currently being tested on a small scale and will be available to a wider audience next year.

Google in earlier this year after the closure of its cloud game platform Stadia, did not give up the exploration of online games. Recently, YouTube began to roll out a new online gaming service called Playables to some of its users, a service that allows users to play a variety of games directly on YouTube without having to download or install them.

Playables is still in the testing stage, only a few users can see the Playables section on YouTube’s homepage. YouTube confirmed the existence of the service on its help page and said that it has been testing since September 5th.

The Playables is somewhat similar to the Google Play store’s Instant Apps feature, which allows users to experience different Android games and apps, but Playables offers full games, not just demos. Additionally, Playables is cross-platform, accessible from both desktop browsers and mobile devices.

YouTube has historically liked to test its experimental features by randomly selecting users and markets, but the scope and duration of the Playables test has not been revealed yet. To find out if you’ve been selected to participate in the test, users will need to sign into YouTube with their Google account and look for the Playables feature on their device. However, that doesn’t mean Playables will necessarily be fully rolled out, as YouTube often axes experimental features, such as ending the YouTube Stories feature this past June.Whether or not Playables will be a success remains to be seen.

According to information on Google’s support page, YouTube is testing the ability to automatically generate video summaries with artificial intelligence (AI), which is one of Google’s latest attempts to explore generative AI technology.

The support page notes that these video summaries will only appear next to a small number of English-language videos, and only a small number of users will be able to see them. They are displayed on YouTube’s watch and search pages, and their purpose is to give users a short overview of the video’s content and help users decide whether to watch the video without replacing the original description written by the video’s author.

Google spokesperson Jen Jamie told The Verge, “We’re testing a new feature for viewers that uses generative AI to create summaries for YouTube videos. We often test new features before rolling them out to provide a better experience for our viewers and creators.” Build and refine the best experience.” According to Jamie, YouTube viewers may see AI-generated summaries on their mobile devices while watching blogs, shopping and tutorial videos in English.

It is noticed that this is one of the many generative AI projects that Google is currently working on. For example, at its developer conference in May, the company announced a new Play Store feature designed to use generative AI to summarize user reviews of your app.
