According to Japanese news, ReactOS is an open-source operating system based on the architectural design principles of Windows NT. Its main goal is to provide an operating system that is binary compatible with the Windows environment, allowing Windows applications and drivers to run as if they were running on Windows. However, currently, ReactOS is still It is in the alpha version and many features are not yet perfect.

Recently, ReactOS Deutschland e.V. has announced the hiring of long-term contributors to the project, who will spend the next five months working on the ReactOS GUI installation model, which will replace the previous text-based installation scheme, thus lowering the barrier for users.

According to an update on its official blog, ReactOS is paying Hermès Bélusca-Maïto to work on the ReactOS GUI installation model for the next five months to complete the first phase of GUI installation development.

Currently, a ReactOS installation goes through three phases. The first two phases deal with the installation of the system, while the third phase is the first available bootstrap interface for the user.

  • Stage 1 – Text mode installation, booting from the ReactOS CD-ROM.
  • Stage 2 – Boot to the GUI installer. User information is entered and files are registered.
  • Stage 3 – Boot to desktop, user configuration.

Currently, the only option for installing ReactOS in the first step is via text mode, the rest of the installation will be handled after the second stage of installation. This has been the standard method of installing ReactOS on a virtual machine or bare metal since the project’s inception, and as such has required some gatekeeping and scared off a number of users.

The GUI installation roadmap for ReactOS

Attachment as follows:

  • Complete the Winesync section on the setupapi.dll extracted from the CAB file.
  • Move the FreeLdr bootloader installation selection step to after the ROS disk/partition selection step and before the actual installation.
  • Integrate registry setup callbacks (currently not present in GUI installations).
  • Add GPT support for GUI installations.
  • Miscellaneous (further cleanup, some refactoring, etc.).

According to The Indian Express report, the Indian Ministry of Defense plans to implement a new round of major reforms and all networked PCs used by the system to abandon Windows, instead of Ubuntu-based self-study Maya OS.

Citing the media report, Maya OS is close to Windows in terms of user interface and interactive experience, which will speed up the migration of its staff.

In addition, Maya OS comes with built-in anti-malware and anti-virus software called Chakravyuh, which creates a virtual layer between the user and the Internet, preventing hackers from accessing sensitive data.

With reports that India has been hit by a number of major security incidents over the past few years, including a nuclear power plant security incident in 2019, India’s defence ministry believes it can reduce malware attacks after switching to a homegrown, Ubuntu-based version.

Reports claim that Indian software companies and academic institutions have collaborated to test and improve the operating system, and after a six-month trial, the Indian Navy has approved its use and the Army and Air Force are currently evaluating it.

Microsoft project manager Jess Krynitsky published a blog post today, announcing that starting from the Win11 preview version released in September 2023 and subsequent Windows system versions, support for TLS 1.0/1.1 will be disabled by default.

Microsoft says that TLS versions 1.0 and 1.1 date back to 1999 and 2006, respectively, and as a result have seen a very large number of vulnerabilities over the past few years.

Microsoft has added support for TLS 1.2 since Win8 and TLS 1.3 in Win11.

Microsoft’s official press release is as follows:

  • Internet standards and regulatory bodies have deprecated or banned TLS versions 1.0 and 1.1 over the past few years due to various security concerns.
  • We have been tracking the use of the TLS protocol for many years and have now confirmed that the usage figures for TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 are low enough to take action.
  • Beginning with the September 2023 release of Win11 Preview and subsequent versions of Windows, TLS 1.0/1.1 will be disabled by default to help encourage users to use more secure, modern protocols.

Microsoft recently opened a new Windows Core OS Platform blog that provides in-depth information about the foundations of Windows.

Microsoft’s Hari Pulapaka wrote in an introductory post, “The Windows Core OS Platform team is responsible for the core development of Windows systems, including virtualization platforms, silicon support (Intel, AMD, and Arm), kernels, storage file systems, and hyper-converged storage infrastructure, including Spaces Direct. This includes Spaces Direct.

In addition, we built and deployed a purpose-built Windows-based operating system for Azure Cloud,” he continued. We migrated our old blog, which was entirely focused on Windows kernels, to consolidate all the technologies the team had.

Pulapaka noted that members of the team will use the Windows Core OS Platform team blog to discuss the internals of upcoming features of the Windows Core OS platform. The first non-introductory post discusses how the team is providing a dedicated host operating system for the Azure cloud called Cloud Host.

Pulapaka explains that “Cloud Host is a purpose-built console (no GUI, also called headless by some) version of Windows, a version of Windows based on OneCore”.

OneCore is the base layer on which all Windows SKU (or version) families build their functionality. It is a set of components (executables, DLLs, etc.) required by all versions of Windows (PC, Windows Server, XBOX, or IoT).

It is the base class (e.g. Object) that all Windows classes inherit from, as opposed to programming classes. If you look inside OneCore to see what it offers, you can see the set of APIs that provide the core functionality of the kernel, hypervisor, file system support, networking, security, Win32 API, etc.
