Microsoft today released Windows 11 22H2 system patch update KB5023706 (OS Build 22621.1413), bringing a number of new features, improvements and more. This update addresses security issues with the Windows operating system.

Improvements

This security update includes improvements as part of Update KB5022913 (released February 28, 2023). When installing this KB.

This update implements the third phase of the Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) enhancements. See KB5004442. After installing this update, users cannot turn off changes using registry entries.

This update resolves an issue affecting computer accounts and Active Directory. When reusing an existing computer account to join an Active Directory domain, the join fails. This occurs on devices with Windows updates installed on or after October 11, 2022. The error message is Error 0xaac (2732): NERR_AccountReuseBlockedByPolicy: ‘An account with the same name exists in Active Directory. Re-using the Re-using the account was blocked by security policy.'” For more information, see KB5020276.

Some feature notes for KB5022913.

New feature! This update adds a new Tamil Anjar keyboard for Tamil. To add it, make sure Tamil (Singapore), Tamil (Malaysia), Tamil (Sri Lanka) or Tamil (India)) appears in Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region. Select the ellipsis (…) next to the language. .). Select “Language options”. Add Tamil Anjal (QWERTY) to the list of keyboards.

This update improves the reliability of Windows after installing the update.

This update affects Mexico, United States. This update supports the government’s 2023 Daylight Saving Time change order.

This update resolves a date information issue. It affects the date format sent between Windows and certain versions of the Heimdal Kerberos library.

This update resolves a compatibility issue affecting certain printers. These printers use the Windows Graphics Device Interface (GDI) printer drivers. These drivers do not follow the GDI specification exactly.

This update resolves an issue affecting the software keyboard. It will not appear in OOBE (Out-of-box experience) after a one-click reset (restoring factory settings). This type of reset requires an external keyboard to be attached to provide credentials.

This update fixes an issue affecting AppV. It prevents file names from having the correct letter case (upper or lower case).

This update resolves an issue affecting Microsoft Edge. This issue removes the conflict policy for Microsoft Edge. This can occur when MDMWinsOverGPFlag is set in a Microsoft Intune tenant and Intune detects a policy conflict.

This update resolves an issue affecting pre-matched packages. In some cases, they could not be applied when elevation was required.

This update resolves an issue affecting Azure Active Directory (Azure AD). Batch pre-provisioning using pre-provisioning packages failed.

This update resolves an issue affecting the Configuration Service Provider (CSP) for Universal Printing. When installing a printer, a command prompt window is displayed.

This update resolves a reliability issue that occurred when using Job View.

This update resolves an issue that may affect lsass.exe. It may stop responding. This occurred when it sent Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) queries to a domain controller with a very large LDAP filter.

This update resolves an issue that affects the Local Security Agency Subsystem Service (LSASS). the LSASS may stop responding. This happens after running Sysprep on a computer that has joined the domain.

This update resolves an issue affecting replication from the network to the local drive. For some users, replication was slower than expected.

This update resolves an issue affecting parity-checked virtual disks. Creating them using Server Manager failed.

If a user installed an earlier update, only the new updates included in this package will be downloaded and installed on the device.

Windows 11 Service Stack Update – 22621.1344

This update provides quality improvements to the service stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Service Stack Update (SSU) ensures that users have a robust and reliable service stack so that devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

The following are known issues.

Windows 11 update

Issue 1: Applies to IT administrators. Using pre-configured packages on Windows 11 version 22H2 (also known as Windows 11 2022 Update) may not work as expected. Windows may be only partially configured and the out-of-the-box experience may not complete or may reboot unexpectedly. Configuration packages are .PPKG files that are used to help configure a new device for use on an enterprise or school network. Pre-configured packages applied during the initial setup are most likely to be affected by this issue.

Note: Pre-configured Windows devices using Windows Autopilot are not affected by this issue. Windows devices used by consumers in their homes or small offices are less likely to be affected by this issue.

Solution: If users can configure Windows devices before upgrading to Windows 11 version 22H2, this will prevent the issue from occurring. Microsoft is currently investigating and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

Issue 2: Applies to IT administrators. Copying large multi-gigabyte (GB) files on Windows 11 version 22H2 may take longer than expected to complete. Users are more likely to experience this problem when copying files from a network share to Windows 11 version 22H2 via Server Message Block (SMB), but local file copying may also be affected. Windows devices used by consumers at home or in small offices are less likely to be affected by this issue.

Solution: To mitigate this issue, users can take advantage of a file copying tool that does not use a cache manager (buffered I/O). This can be done by using the following built-in command line tools listed below.

Issue 3: Applies to IT administrators. Some Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) servers may not provide updates to Windows 11 version 22H2 that are released on or after February 14, 2023. Updates will be downloaded to the WSUS server, but may not be delivered further to client devices. The only affected WSUS servers are those running Windows Server 2022 and have been upgraded from Windows Server 2016 or Windows Server 2019. This issue is caused by the accidental removal of the required Unified Update Platform (UUP) MIME type during an upgrade to Windows Server 2022 from a previous version of Windows Server. This issue may affect security updates or feature updates for Windows 11 version 22H2.Microsoft Configuration Manager is not affected by this issue.

Solution: To mitigate this issue, see Adding file types locally to the Unified Update Platform.

Microsoft is working on a solution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

Issue 4: Applies to all users. Windows devices with certain third-party UI customization applications may not start after installing this update or later. These third-party applications may cause errors in explorer.exe, which may repeat multiple times in a loop. Known affected third-party UI customization applications are ExplorerPatcher and StartAllBack. these types of applications typically use unsupported methods to implement their customizations and therefore may produce unexpected results on Windows devices.

Solution: Microsoft recommends uninstalling any third-party UI customization applications before installing this update or future updates to prevent this issue. If the user is already experiencing this issue on their Windows device, they may need to contact the customer support of the developer of the application they are using. If StartAllBack is in use, this issue can be prevented by updating to the latest version (v3.5.6 or later).

Microsoft released the Patch Tuesday security update for Windows 11, Windows 10, and Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 for November 2022.

Along with the Windows 10 “Patch Tuesday” release, Microsoft also issued a reminder that Windows 10 version 21H1 (Windows 10, May 2021 update) will soon reach EOS (End of Service).

"Microsoft reminds: "It's important to note that all Windows 10 version 21H1 will stop being supported on December 13, 2022. after December 13, 2022, these devices will not receive monthly security and quality updates. Subsequent updates include protection against the latest security threats. To continue receiving security and quality updates, we recommend updating to the latest version of Windows."

Mabel Gomes, senior communications program manager at Microsoft, reminded users of this in a post on the Microsoft Technical Community forums today. While Windows 10 21H1 devices will automatically update to the latest supported version of Windows (unless they are somehow blocked by the user), Microsoft also reminds people that Windows 11 is supported for upgrades if they are eligible devices. Microsoft makes several references to the recent Windows 11 22H2 feature update throughout the post, and the company seems to want more Windows 10 users to get on the Windows 11 train.

"We automatically update devices nearing the end of their service period to the latest version of Windows 10, but you can also choose to upgrade eligible devices to Windows 11.

[......] Windows 11, version 22H2 -- also known as Windows 11 2022 Update -- is available on eligible Windows devices."

There’s a reason why Microsoft keeps reminding users to upgrade to Windows 11. The latest data shows that only 15 percent of users have upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11. The strict system requirements of Windows 11 have discouraged many users. This will be a big challenge for enterprise devices, and even after a full year, only about half of the systems will be available with Windows 11.

In September this year, Microsoft released the latest “Windows 11 2022 Update”, also known as Windows 11 22H2 version.

For a group of developers, it is necessary to adapt to the latest system version in time. To get a better understanding of the Windows 11 22H2 runtime environment, you can choose to download the free official virtual machine for debugging.

Microsoft now offers the latest developer tool, the Win11 22H2 Virtual Machine, which allows users to more easily evaluate Windows 11 2022 updates, Visual Studio 2022, WSL, and other utilities.

It’s worth noting that Microsoft’s Windows 11-based virtual machines are not completely free and can only be used for free after download until January 10, 2023.

After that date, Microsoft will require developers to activate Windows like any other virtual machine or local installation (and continue to use it if it can be activated with a genuine key). However, two months should be enough time for developers to familiarize themselves with the

Windows 11 Enterprise SKU (evaluation version)

Visual Studio 2022 Community Edition with UWP, .NET Desktop, Azure, and Windows App SDK for C# workloads

Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 subsystem with Ubuntu pre-installed

Windows Terminal

Developer Mode

Microsoft offers four versions of Windows 11 virtual machines for different virtualization software: VMWare, Hyper-V, VirtualBox and Parallels.

It is worth noting that to use Windows 11 22H2 you also have to make sure that you have at least 20GB of free disk space on your computer, you can find more details and download addresses on the official website.

With the first round of updates pushing out, many people are looking forward to uncovering more eggs in Windows 11 22H2. And in a tweet on Tuesday, Microsoft engineer Jen Gentleman shared an interesting tip. After installing the Windows 11 22H2 update, users will be able to use the CTRL + Shift + C key combination to copy the storage path of selected files.

The push of the eligible Windows 11 22H2 update is on track, despite the performance degradation of NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards and the possible blue screen of death of the Intel SST driver.

In addition to some UI changes as far as the eye can see, this round of OS updates also brings a few other tips that may be hard to spot.

If you need to organize your files in Windows 11 on a regular basis, you’ll be delighted with the return of File Explorer’s multi-tab feature, which allows multiple tabs to be cut off in a single window for more efficient use.

Image (via Windows Latest)

In an announcement last week, Microsoft wrote: “File Explorer has been enhanced to include the reintroduction of multiple tabs. It enables you to organize related sessions in File Explorer as you would in Microsoft Edge browser”.

"A new home page in File Explorer allows quick access to favourites and recent files - you can pin important files here to access them more easily and conveniently.

With your Microsoft 365 account signed in, you can even see at a glance what your colleagues are doing with the files they share via OneDrive and Personalisation."

And with @JenMsft’s new suggestion, you can also easily copy the storage path of a given file using the CTRL + Shift + C key combination – and then paste it into a text document using the CTRL + V key combination.

These devices come with Windows 11 Build 22621.521 (KB5017321), which is indeed the 22H2 update that Microsoft will confirm later.

But, as is often the case, the new update is not without its problems. The update process failed for many users with the error code “0x800f0806”. A large number of users managed to update with other problems on their systems with Nvidia graphics cards. Users on Reddit and Microsoft forums have expressed similar views.

The latest development is that Nvidia has confirmed that it is investigating the matter. Manuel Guzman, the company’s software QA, has asked affected users to provide additional feedback on a Reddit post.

For most users, Windows 11 offers a seamless upgrade experience, but for some users, it is not possible to upgrade to Windows 11 22H2 update properly. But don’t worry, solving the Windows 11 22H2 installation issue is relatively simple. Users on Reddit, Microsoft forums and Feedback Hub have documented the issue.

One user commented, “My update download keeps getting stuck at 0%”. Another user fed back: “I can’t install this update, but trying again pops up the 0x8007001f error”. There are similar reports on social media, with one user saying, “I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Carbon X1 Gen 8 that is fully eligible for the update, but cannot upgrade 22H2”.

Often, stuck Windows 11 version 22H2 updates are the result of driver/software conflicts, missing updates, or cached Windows update files causing the update service to freeze during the download process. Even the best hardware can experience installation issues, and Surface products can be affected as well.

Fixing Windows 11 22H2 installation issues

Keep waiting for hours

If Windows Update shows that it is stuck on a certain progress, but may actually still be running in the background, the actual upgrade may take longer than usual. In some cases, Windows 11 systems wait a few hours for the update to execute.

You need to make sure that the update is indeed stuck. According to reports, users are allowed to run the download for a maximum of 3 hours. We recommend waiting a few hours, especially for older machines. The download size is apparently close to 4GB, which may seem extreme, but if you wait, the installation may work.

Forced updates via installation media

If the update does not work, then you can download the Windows 11 22H2 image to perform the update manually. Keep in mind that it’s best to wait a month before installing major feature updates like 22H2, as some heavyweight features like tagging of File Manager will go live this October.

So far, Microsoft’s September 20 date for the release of Windows 11 remains speculation. But it does look like the release will fall on that date, as Microsoft has already pushed Windows 11 22H2 to servers as an ISO. For all previous versions, Microsoft has added the word “Insider” to their names.

But it does not matter. Because this addition could be ignored, until now. Even hardware manufacturers have delivered devices with Windows 11 22H2, where 22621.382 is installed, and with the security update in September we have reached 22621.521.

As you can see in the picture, the ISOs for upgrades (21H2 to 22H2) or new installations are already available on Microsoft’s servers.

The Windows 11 22H2 beta is also about to change. 22622 is currently being tested there and this is said to be nearing completion of development. It will be distributed before the end of this year.

The latest projected release schedule is.

Windows 11 22H2 (22621) will probably be officially launched next week.

Windows 11 22H2 (22622) will be released as an “update” later this year. And KB5015669 will activate new features

KB5015669 features updates to Windows 11 22H2 (22622).

Windows 11 22H2 (22623) will be available again next year as an “update”. Here, it will be KB5018863 that activates the new feature. Testing will probably start soon on the test channel.

As a supplement, Windows 11 22H2 22622 is already listed in the registry.

22622 for Windows 11 is already listed in the registry. 22621 and 22622 are now listed under the key NI22H2. This entry can also be found under Windows 10 at

Microsoft is expected to release the new Windows 11 22H2 feature update in September or October of this year, but so far Microsoft has not announced a public/commercial name and release date.

The next feature update for Windows 11 is known internally as “Version 22H2” and “Sun Valley 2 / SV2”.

A new reference in Microsoft’s “Getting Started” application suggests that the update will likely be called “Windows 11 2022 Update”. As you can see in the screenshot below, a promotional message appears when the Getting Started app is opened.

The promotional message reads “You are now running Windows 11 2022 Update, read on to discover the new features and set them up to your liking”. Of course, the application does not provide additional details when you click the button now.

It’s worth noting that the name “Windows 11 2022 Update” has not been finally confirmed.

Microsoft has confirmed that Build 22621 is the RTM / final version of Windows 11 22H2, and reports suggest that the update could be available as early as September 20 for the first wave of devices.

As with all previous feature updates, it will be available in Windows Update for new hardware first, and users can download it by clicking the “Download/Install” button. These users are officially considered “explorers,” i.e., those who are willing to try the update before it rolls out automatically.

Microsoft may plan to accelerate the push in October and November, as it gets more feedback from early adopters.

In terms of new features, Windows 11 22H2 will restore the much-anticipated support for the taskbar “drag and drop” feature. It will also come with a redesigned Task Manager that will use WinUI and Fluent Design, including Mica and Acrylic materials.

This feature update also includes Start menu improvements, faster context menus, Windows Spotlight for the desktop, and tab support in File Explorer (expected to be released after 22H2).
