In addition to releasing optional non-security updates for Win11 22H2 and 21H2 today, Microsoft also released KB5029331 optional updates for Win10 systems. After installation, the version number rose to 19045.3393.

This update focuses on improving the positioning method and fixing errors related to high CPU usage, BitLocker, and virtual print queues.

The updated content is as follows:

  • New: This update improves the way Windows is positioned to help provide users with better weather, news, and traffic information.
  • New features: This update further introduces the notification badge function in the start menu for users who have logged in with a Microsoft account.
  • This update supports Israel’s Daylight Saving Time (DST) changes.
  • This update addresses an issue affecting the display of the search box.
  • This update fixes an issue where switching from the Settings app’s Windows Backup page would not sync.

Improve:

  • This update resolves an issue affecting the Group Policy service. There is no longer a 30-second (default wait) wait for network availability, so policies cannot be processed correctly.
  • This update adds a new API for D3D12 standalone devices. You can use it to create multiple D3D12 devices on the same adapter.
  • This update resolves an issue affecting WS_EX_LAYERED windows. Originally windows could be rendered in the wrong size or in the wrong position. This happens when you zoom the display.
  • This update addresses an issue where print jobs sent to virtual print queues would fail. They will fail without any errors.
  • This update addresses an issue that caused high CPU usage. This happens when the “fBlockNonDomain” policy is enabled.
  • This update addresses an issue affecting disk partitions. This problem may cause the system to stop working. This problem mainly occurs after you delete a disk partition and add the space of the deleted partition to the existing BitLocker partition.
  • This update addresses an issue affecting Result Set Policies (RSOP). This happens when the Windows LAPS “BackupDirectory” policy is set to 1 (i.e. “Backup to AAD”).
  • This update addresses an issue for those using Windows Update for Business. To put it simply, the system will ask you to change your password when you log in, causing the change operation to fail, and then you will not be able to log in, and the error code is 0xc000006d.

Microsoft has released a preview update to KB5026435 (internal version 19045.3031) for users running Windows 10 22H2. The update brings several new features, including an improved search box experience and many other smaller improvements.

Important Information

  • New features! This update restores an improved search box experience on the Windows 10 taskbar. If there is a top, bottom, general, or small icon taskbar, the search box will be displayed. You can use it to easily access apps, files, settings, and more from Windows and the Web. You will also have access to the latest search updates, such as search highlighting. To restore the previous search experience, you can easily perform this action. To do so, use the taskbar context menu or respond to the dialog box that appears when using search.
  • New feature! This update now displays up to three high-priority Toast notifications at the same time. This feature affects applications that use Windows OS notifications to send call, reminder, or alert notifications. Up to four Toast notifications can be displayed at the same time. This means there can be three high-priority notifications and one normal-priority notification.
  • This update resolves an issue that affected access to tab settings for IE mode websites.
  • This update resolves an issue with multifunctional label printers. It affects the installation of some of them.
  • This update resolves an issue affecting the touch keyboard. Sometimes it would not display the correct layout based on the current input range.
  • This update resolves an issue that sometimes prevented the touch keyboard from opening.

Improvements

Important: Use EKB KB5015684 to update to Windows 10 version 22H2.

This non-security updater includes quality improvements. When installing this KB:

  • This update resolves an issue affecting the application installer. Sometimes, MSIX applications could not be updated.
  • This update resolves an issue affecting Server Message Block (SMB). The SMB shared folder could not be accessed. The error was “Insufficient memory resources” or “Insufficient system resources”.
  • This update resolves an issue affecting the Local Security Agency Subsystem Service (LSASS). It stopped working. This can occur when using Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD).
  • This update resolves an issue affecting scheduled tasks. Tasks fail when using stored local user account credentials. This happens when Credential Guard is enabled. The error message is “2147943726: ERROR_LOGON_FAILURE (username or password) is incorrect.
  • This update resolves an issue affecting Storage Space Direct (S2D) clusters. It may not come online. This occurs after a periodic password rollup update. The error code is 1326.
  • This update resolves an issue that affects point sourcing. It causes files containing class definitions in Windows PowerShell to fail.
  • This update changes the support phone number for Microsoft India for Windows activation.
  • This update resolves an issue affecting PublishDfsRoots policies. It does not apply to target clients with Mobile Device Management (MDM), an example of which is Microsoft Intune.
  • This update changes the International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) scope for certain mobile providers.
  • This update resolves an issue affecting the Windows firewall. The firewall removes all connections to the IP address of the mandatory portal. This happens when the “Force Portal Address” option is selected.
  • This update resolves an issue that affects devices that have joined Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) for which Windows Firewall is unable to apply the correct domain and profile.
  • This update resolves an issue that affects signed Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC) policies. They do not apply to the secure kernel. This happens when secure boot is enabled.
  • This update resolves an issue that could affect large reanalysis points. When accessing it using NTFS, you may receive a stop error. This issue can occur after a cancelled FSCTL Set operation changes the reanalysis flag.
  • This update resolves a known issue that may affect some speech recognition applications. They may have occasional speech recognition, expressive input, and handwriting issues. This can occur when the display language is Chinese or Japanese. The application may not recognize certain words. They may not receive any input from speech recognition or the affected input type. This issue is more likely to occur when the application uses offline speech recognition. For application developers, this issue only affects speech recognition using the Speech Recognition Grammar Specification (SRGS) in Windows. This issue does not affect other types of speech recognition.

Windows 10 Service Stack Update – 19045.3025

This update provides quality improvements to the Service Stack. The Service Stack is the component that installs Windows updates, and Service Stack Update (SSU) ensures that your device can receive and install Microsoft updates.

Known issues in this update

Devices that use Windows installations created from custom offline media or custom ISO images may have had Microsoft Edge older versions of this update removed, but will not be automatically replaced by the new Microsoft Edge. This issue is only encountered when creating a custom offline media or ISO image by sliding this update into the image with SSU released on March 29, 2021 or later (with the Standalone Service Stack update installed).

Note Devices that connect directly to Windows Update to receive updates are not affected. This includes devices that use Windows Update for Business. Any device connected to Windows Update should always receive the latest version of SSU and the latest cumulative updates (LCU) without performing any additional steps.

Workaround:

  • To avoid this issue, be sure to slide the SSU released on March 29, 2021 or later into a custom offline media or ISO image before sliding the LCU. To do this for the SSU and LCU packages now used for Windows 10, version 20H2 and Windows 10, version 2004 combinations, you will need to extract the SSU from the combination package Use the following steps to extract the SSU:
  • Extract the cab from msu (for example, using the KB5000842 package) with this command line: expand Windows10.0-KB5000842-x64.msu/f: Windows10.0-KB5000842-x64.cab
  • Extract the SSU from the previously extracted cab with the following command line: Expand Windows10.0-KB5000842-x64.cab/f:*
  • This will then yield the SSU cab, named SSU-19041.903-x64.cab in this example. first add this file to the offline digital image, and then add the LCU.
  • If this issue has been encountered by installing the OS using the affected custom media, it can be mitigated by installing a new Microsoft Edge directly.

Microsoft is currently focusing on Windows 11 as the main development, with Windows 10 entering the later stages of technical support as a secondary update. Recent indications are that Microsoft stopped selling Windows 10 licenses through its website by the end of January, while the company released lackluster updates to the operating system’s features last year. Now, Microsoft is further de-prioritizing older versions of Windows 10.

In addition to releasing cumulative update KB5019275 for Windows 10 to fix some existing issues and a new OneDrive storage alert, Microsoft also released a notification reminder:

“After March 2023, Windows 10 Supported Version 20H2 and Windows 10 Supported Version 21H2 will no longer have optional non-Security Preview releases. These releases will only have cumulative monthly security updates (known as “B” or Patch Tuesday releases) ) will continue. Windows 10 version 22H2 will continue to receive security and optional update releases.”

Most versions of Windows 10 version 20H2 are no longer supported, but its support for enterprise, education, and IoT enterprise customers will continue until May 9, 2023. Windows 10 version 21H2, on the other hand, will continue to support Home, Professional, Professional Education, and Workstation Professional SKUs until June 13, 2023, and support for Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise customers until 20246 11th.

These are the two versions of Windows 10 affected by this announcement, which will not receive Microsoft’s optional preview updates starting in March of this year. However, they will still receive cumulative security updates until their end of life.

This means that the 22H2 version is the only fully supported version of Windows 10 going forward and will continue to receive optional preview updates. However, the full version of the Microsoft Windows 10 system will also stop support on October 14, 2025.

Microsoft today released an emergency out-of-band (OOB) update KB5020953 for Windows 10 systems to fix the OneDrive crash that the company recently reported.
