Elon Musk posted on Weibo that the purpose of this AI DAY event is to recruit engineers in the field of artificial intelligence and robotics, so the content will be quite hardcore.

Tesla’s AI Day 2022 will be on Oct. 1. It is reported that the conference will release more of its latest progress on AI such as fully automated driving FSD, humanoid robots, supercomputing DojoD1 chips, etc. Elon Musk also tweeted yesterday to warm up for AI Day, saying there will be lots of technical details and cool hardware demos.

This year’s AI Day will feature a prototype of Optimus Prime, a new concept introduced by Elon Musk at the first Tesla AI Day event last Aug. 19. Tesla said the robot will operate using the eight cameras used by its Autopilot system and will have a screen on its head in order to interact with humans. Elon Musk said that if the Optimus Prime can be mass-produced in the next two years, it will cost less than a car at scale, perhaps $25,000 (about 167,400 yuan).

The Tesla 2022 AI Day event will be held in Palo Alto, California on September 30, 2022 North American time (expected October 1, Beijing time), where the Tesla Bot, which brings science fiction to reality, is expected to make its debut. In addition, the latest developments in Tesla’s self-driving technology and Dojo supercomputer may also be announced on that day.

Looking back at last year’s AI Day event on August 20, the launch of the Tesla Bot was a big, heavyweight egg. Tesla says it stands 1.72 meters tall, weighs 56.6 kg, has a screen on its face that displays information, and has human-level hands and powerful feedback sensing for balance and agile movements. In just one year, Tesla will bring this egg to life.

Not long ago, in an article published in China NetNewsWire magazine, Elon Musk wrote: “Tesla robots are initially positioned to replace people in repetitive, boring, and dangerous jobs. But the visionary goal is for them to serve thousands of households, such as cooking, mowing lawns, and caring for the elderly.”

“The Tesla robot is close to the height and weight of an adult, can carry or hand-carry heavy objects, can also walk in small steps, and the screen on its face is the interactive interface for communication with people,” Elon Musk said, “You may wonder why we designed this robot with legs? Because human society is based on the interaction of a bipedal humanoid with two arms and ten fingers. So if we want a robot to adapt to its environment and be able to do what humans do, he has to have roughly the same size, shape and capabilities as a human.”

According to Elon Musk, “Thereafter, the utility of humanoid robots will increase every year as production scales up and costs drop. In the future, a home robot could be cheaper than a car. Perhaps in less than a decade, people will be able to buy their parents a robot as a birthday present.”

To achieve ultra-high computing power for AI training while extending bandwidth, reducing latency and saving costs, Tesla built the Dojo supercomputer. the Dojo supercomputer’s individual training module consists of 25 of Tesla’s self-developed neural network training chips, the D1 chips. Since each D1 chip is seamlessly connected together with extremely low latency between adjacent chips, the training module maximizes bandwidth reservation, and with Tesla’s own high-bandwidth, low-latency connector; the arithmetic power is up to 9 PFLOPs (9 trillion times) and I/O bandwidth is up to 36 TB/s in a volume of less than 1 cubic foot.

Thanks to the training module’s ability to run independently and infinite linkage, the Dojo supercomputer is a “performance beast” with no theoretical upper limit on performance expansion. In practice, Tesla will assemble 120 training modules into ExaPOD, the world’s premier artificial intelligence training computer. Compared to other products in the industry, it offers a 4x performance increase at the same cost, a 1.3x performance increase at the same energy consumption, and a 5x space savings.

Since the release of the Dojo supercomputer last year, the development process of Tesla’s FSD (Full Self-Driving capability) has continued to accelerate. At this year’s AGM, Elon Musk revealed that FSD version 10.13 has been under study for some time and that Tesla has made “some very important architectural improvements,” such as improving the complexity of left turns. He said that Tesla is now widely deployed in North America FSD beta version, and will start a large-scale test of the fully autonomous driving capability (FSD) software this year, the beta version of the software has exceeded 40 million miles, and the end of the year is expected to exceed 100 million miles.

Elon Musk said at last year’s AI Day event, “What we’re trying to do at Tesla is make artificial intelligence that people like and that works …… and there’s no doubt that it’s going to be good artificial intelligence.” What surprises will Musk bring this year? Let’s wait and see.

Tesla has scheduled the 2022 “AI Day” event on September 30, local time in the United States, and from Friday to send out invitations, which mentioned that it will release more information about the driver-assisted driving system FSD, Tesla humanoid robot, supercomputing Dojo and other AI-related progress.

While it’s been a long time since Tesla held a formal product launch, the company has begun to regularly hold annual events centered on specific themes, much like Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) and fall product launches.

The tradition began in 2020 with Tesla’s “Battery Day,” when the automaker unveiled its new 4680 battery and plans to produce its own batteries for the first time.

Earlier this year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed that Tesla would hold its second “AI Day” in August, but he quickly postponed the event to Sept. 30 to allow more time to showcase a prototype Tesla robot at the event.

Tesla began sending out invitations to the event on Friday, local time in the United States. It reads.

“You have been invited to attend AI Day 2022 on September 30 in Palo Alto, California. You will have the opportunity to learn about the latest advances Tesla has made in AI, including FSD, robotics, Dojo and more.”

The invitation also offers notes.

To reserve your seat, please respond to this email by 11:59 pm on September 28th. We will follow up with more details and look forward to meeting you! You must have a valid ID to be admitted. Invitations are non-transferable and can only be used by anyone for admission. We do not cover travel and accommodation costs.”

So far, Tesla’s invitations appear to have been distributed randomly, although some FSD Beta testers and long-time Tesla car owners say they have received invitations to the event.

Elon Musk has previously identified “AI Day” as a recruiting tool for Tesla to expand its AI team. However, it could also be seen as a technology and vision presentation, where Tesla owners will get an update on the timeline and details on when and how Tesla plans to deliver on its promise to enable full self-driving capabilities in cars built since 2016.

Elon Musk has revised his expected targets several times recently. Initially, he said there would be 1 million self-driving cars on the road by the end of 2022, and now he’s changed it to say the number of FSD Beta testers will reach 1 million, but the two are completely different things.

Last year, Tesla launched its supercomputer project Dojo at its AI Day event, and this year, the company is expected to launch a cluster of supercomputers based on Dojo technology.

Finally, there’s Tesla Robotics. Elon Musk has repeatedly said that Tesla will have early prototypes ready for the event. He has made it clear that the humanoid robot project has become the company’s latest priority, even as it steals significant resources from the Autopilot and FSD teams.

Tesla also has its own plans for how to use such robots. In a job listing titled “Motion Planning and Navigation, Tesla Robotics,” the company writes that it plans to “use thousands of humanoid robots in its factories.

It says, “Tesla is building humanoid bipedal robots on a large scale to automate repetitive and tedious tasks. At the heart of Tesla’s robotics, the motion planning stack offers a unique opportunity to investigate state-of-the-art motion planning and navigation algorithms for eventual deployment into real-world production processes. Our motion planning software engineers are developing the stack. Most importantly, you will see thousands of humanoid robots being used in our factories.”

Tesla said the initial version of the Tesla robot will focus on completing simple repetitive tasks that will make the robot useful in a factory environment.

Tesla has begun sending invitations to select customers and supporters to its annual Artificial Intelligence (AI) Day event scheduled for Sept. 30, 2022, according to foreign media reports.

The company said that at that time, Tesla will unveil its latest advances in AI, which include fully automated driving (FSD), humanoid robots, AI training Dojo D1 chips and more. In addition to sharing new advances in AI, Tesla typically uses the event to attract new engineering talent to work for the company.

So far, Tesla’s FSD system has been in testing for nearly two years. Currently, the system has more than 100,000 testers. By refining its FSD beta, Tesla hopes to gradually approach Level 5 autonomous driving.

Earlier this September, Tesla officially increased the price of the FSD system in North America from $12,000 to $15,000, a 25 percent increase.

Tesla’s humanoid robot reportedly made its debut at the Tesla AI Day event in August 2021, and it will also appear at the Tesla AI Day event on Sept. 30 this year.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said the robot is close to the height and weight of an adult, can carry or hand-carry heavy objects, can also walk in small steps, and that the screen on its face is an interactive interface for communication with people. The robot is initially positioned to replace people in repetitive, boring, dangerous work, but the vision is to make it serve thousands of households, such as cooking, mowing the lawn, and caring for the elderly.

Elon Musk is reportedly working on plans to deploy thousands of humanoid robots in his Texas super factory and eventually millions more around the world.

At last year’s AI Day event, Tesla unveiled its latest AI training chip, the Dojo D1, which is built on TSMC’s 7nm process and integrates up to 50 billion transistors, half the size of Intel’s Ponte Vecchio computing chip.
