Google seems to be introducing support for Sony’s DualSense Edge controller in Android 14, while the existing DualSense wireless controller for PS5 only requires macOS Big Sur 11.3, iOS / iPadOS 14.5, tvOS 14.5, and Android 12 can be supported.

Mishaal Rahman discovered that Android 14 code adds layout files for DualSense Edge, providing smartphones with basic support for this controller. This means that the next generation of Android 14 will bring gamers more advanced controller support when pressing a button can map the corresponding input command.

He also emphasized that in order to use the Dualsense Edge controller, your device will also need to have the latest hid-PlayStation kernel patch applied to support it properly. This is due to a new product ID built into DualSense Edge, so existing hid-PlayStation drivers will not work yet.

While this might mean you’ll be able to play games with Sony’s DualSense Edge “elite controller” on an Android 14-based phone. Let’s not talk about the control experience, I believe that the Bank of China’s price of only 1599 CNY is enough to dissuade a large number of players.

According to reports, the new features of the elite model of Sony DualSense Edge include:

It is possible to adjust the sensitivity and dead zone of the joystick, the keystroke of the trigger key and the dead zone;

Multiple control profiles can be saved simultaneously for use in different games;

Comes with a dedicated Fn button to help users quickly switch between different control profiles and adjust game settings;

Has 3 types of replaceable rocker caps and 2 types of replaceable back keys;

The rocker module can be replaced to increase the life of the controller(sold separately).

At the same time, the DualSense Edge controller will also support all the functions of the DualSense controller, including built-in microphones, adaptive triggers, haptic feedback vibrations, and more. The DualSense Edge controller will come with a joystick cap, back button and USB Type-C charging cable, and the charging cable connector can be locked with the controller to ensure that the user will not loosen the charging cable due to excessive shaking in wired mode.

Sony announced in August this year the DualSense Edge handle, which is a handle product against the Microsoft Xbox Elite series. The DualSense Edge grip is currently listed in China, with a debut price of 1,599 yuan. Sony recently confirmed in an official statement that this DualSense Edge handle is shorter than the original DualSense handle for PlayStation 5.

Foreign technology media The Verge discovered this when reviewing the DualSense Edge handle, and then Sony confirmed to the media in an official statement that the new handle’s battery life will be “moderately shortened”. Sony said in the statement.

"The DualSense Edge wireless controller has a slightly shorter battery life than the original DualSense wireless controller. That's because we've packed more features into the same form factor and ergonomics as the original DualSense. We want to better balance wireless battery life and provide strong high-performance features.

In addition, the longer braided USB cable is also ideal for competitive gamers who prefer to game with a wired connection to avoid wireless interference, an option that provides longer battery life."

As you can see from the statement above, Sony is trying to downplay concerns that gamepads need to be recharged frequently. It’s disappointing, though, that the more advanced PlayStation controllers don’t come with more powerful batteries, especially since the PS5’s DualSense controller’s battery life has shrunk compared to the PS4’s DualShock 4.

Sony’s DualSense Edge wireless joystick for PS5 is now available for pre-order from the PlayStation Direct website ahead of its Jan. 26 release. The grip has additional features not found on the standard DualSense model, such as an interchangeable joystick and two back buttons. But it costs $199.99, almost three times the price of the standard DualSense joystick.

For this jaw-dropping price, Sony also has its extra giveaways, with a fair amount of extras included in the package to help customize the DualSense Edge for gamers.

Included in the package are.

The grip itself

Two standard, high dome and low dome-type joystick caps

Two interchangeable back trigger buttons.

A braided USB cable that locks onto the grip

A carrying case that serves as a charger for the grip when plugged in

Images of the contents of the DualSense Edge package, here’s what you get for $199.99.

Not only can players customize the hardware, Sony also allows for remapping buttons, adjusting the sensitivity and dead space of the joystick, saving multiple control profiles for easy switching, and supporting game volume adjustments directly from the joystick.

Sony’s replacement stick modules for the DualSense Edge are also available for pre-order, although they’re also expensive: $19.99 for a single module. But if the DualSense series is your preferred way to play games, it may be worth it to pay the upfront cost of the Edge so you can replace joysticks that drift or have other problems without having to spend money on new ones over and over again.
