Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 and upcoming Galaxy Watch 6 both have built-in temperature sensors, but there aren’t many practical uses for them, but a new app will change that.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic

The app, called “Thermo Check,” measures the temperature of surrounding objects. It uses the watch’s built-in infrared temperature sensor to collect temperature data through the new skin temperature API. Samsung says users can use the app to “measure the temperature of their surroundings,” such as the water they want to swim in or the food they’re about to eat. Because an infrared sensor is used, the temperature reading can be obtained without touching the object.

It is noticed that Samsung is currently only using this sensor for period tracking and a few other data, but even with this new app, users still don’t seem to be able to get their skin temperature readings at any time.

The Thermo Check app will first launch with “upcoming Galaxy Watch devices,” the Galaxy Watch 6 series and the app will also be available for the Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro later. Samsung will hold an Unpacked event on July 26, where the Galaxy Watch 6 smartwatch will be officially unveiled.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 smartwatch has an advanced BioActive sensor that can accurately and reliably track users’ health data and fitness activities. But almost all smartwatches, whether Samsung or other brands, seem to have difficulty reading health and exercise data from wrists with tattoos.

The ink used in the tattoo can prevent the smartwatch from determining whether the user is wearing the watch, leading to health and sports sensors that may not be able to open and functions such as wear detection not working properly.

This problem exists in most smartwatches, even Apple’s Apple Watch. but the good news is that Samsung is looking for a solution. The moderator for the Galaxy Wear app on Samsung’s community forum recently replied to a user that Samsung developers are adding a feature that should improve wear detection for users with tattoos on their wrists. The moderator said that this update will be released in the second half of 2023.

Based on this vague timeline, this feature could be part of the upcoming One UI Watch 5 and Wear OS 4 updates. The latter should debut first on the new Galaxy Watch 6 series and then roll out for the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 5 series after the Unpacked event on July 27.

Samsung confirmed that it has postponed the launch of the One UI Watch 5 beta program for the Galaxy Watch 4/5 series. Samsung announced in early May that it would launch a Beta testing program for the One UI Watch 5 system based on Wear OS 4 in June, but now it seems that Samsung has adjusted the testing program.

The news comes from the official channels of Samsung’s Korean community, but no new official shelf date has been provided, so it’s unclear how long Galaxy Watch 4/5 series users will have to wait.

Foreign tech media SamMobile believes that Samsung will launch the One UI Watch 5 beta program before releasing the Galaxy Watch 6 series of watches.

Samsung plans to hold a Galaxy Unpacked launch event on July 26 to launch the Galaxy Watch 6 series of watches with the One UI Watch 5 system pre-installed.

The Samsung Health community moderator has confirmed that an update will follow to make better use of the temperature sensor on the Galaxy Watch 5 series of watches, creating more functionality for the wearer.

The official statement from Samsung’s moderators did not specify exactly what the new features/functionality would be, nor was there a specific release date.

Samsung has begun rolling out an update to its Galaxy Watch 5 series of watches in 30 markets across the US, South Korea and Europe that will track a woman’s menstrual cycle through the smartwatch’s skin temperature sensor.

BBT (full name basal body temperature) varies depending on the stage of menstruation. Samsung explains that the skin temperature sensor on the Galaxy Watch 5 has enabled accurate prediction of the menstrual cycle by reading the wearer’s skin temperature upon waking up and before physical activity.

In the eight-year history of MVNO ( mobile virtual network operator ) service, Google Fi ushered in another name change. To celebrate the new Google Fi Wireless name, Google has added smartwatch connectivity, a week-long eSIM trial, and an updated app for easier subscription navigation.

The Wireless program now supports not only the Pixel Watch but also the Samsung Galaxy Watch5 series. Support for all smart wearables is expanding to Unlimited subscriptions; previously, it was only available for Unlimited Plus and Flexible. These devices can stay connected without a phone at no extra cost.

Adding a new line to any subscription will give you a phone — choose a Samsung Galaxy A14, Pixel 6A or Moto G Power. However, the phones should remain on the plan for the next 24 months, and the value of the device will be reimbursed through monthly bill credits. Canceling a subscription early means users have to pay the phone price based on the remaining time.

The Google Fi Wireless app is more family-friendly, allowing owners to limit who can call or text kids in the same group. The redesigned app is still rolling out and is expected to roll out to all users in the next few months.

The State University of New York Research Foundation, the University of Connecticut and Worcester Polytechnic University recently jointly filed a patent lawsuit in the federal court of Texas, claiming that Samsung’s Galaxy Watch smartwatch infringes nine of its technology patents.

The lawsuit concerns smartwatches such as the Galaxy Watch 3, Galaxy Watch 4, Galaxy Watch 5, and Watch Active 2, which claim heart rate, breathing rate, depth and rhythm, body temperature, activity level, skin tone and blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation measurements, and heart failure There are infringements in technologies such as detection and measurement of outdoor temperature, humidity, and air quality.

It is learned from reports that Ki Chon, a professor at the University of Connecticut, met with Matthew Wiggins, a senior algorithm manager at the Samsung Strategy and Innovation Center in Boston in June 2015, and worked with Samsung on the development of smartwatches from 2016 to 2018.

However, the cooperation between the two parties stopped in 2018, and Samsung will continue to promote clinical trials and independently launch heart-related wearable devices.

Samsung received certification from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in September 2020 to release a health monitoring app that can be used on the Galaxy Watch 3 and Galaxy Watch Active 2.

The plaintiffs contend that Samsung’s subsequent Galaxy Watch features were based on Dr. Chun’s papers and publications.

Samsung switched its smartwatch system from TizenOS to Wear OS two years ago. but for the Galaxy Watch 4, the battery life had some shortcomings. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 has improved battery life and will continue to enhance battery performance.

The 40mm version of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 battery has been spotted on the Safety Korea website as EB-BR935ABY with a nominal capacity of 300mAh, compared to the 40mm version of the Galaxy Watch 5 which has a 284mAh battery, a 5% increase in capacity. If Samsung brings a more energy-efficient display and chip, it could still offer a longer battery life.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 is modeled SM-R93x for the 40mm version and SM-R94x for the 44mm version. There will most likely also be a Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Pro with a larger battery capacity for longer battery life.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 series will return to the curved screen design used on the Galaxy Watch Active 2, and may use the Huaxing Optoelectronics display. The smartwatch will also bring an updated version of One UI for Watch, improved activity and health tracking, and longer battery life.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 and newer smartwatches have ECG ECG built in, but the company hasn’t activated the feature in most markets around the world, the same is true for its latest smartwatches, the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. Samsung has now announced that it has activated ECG and blood pressure monitoring for the Galaxy Watch 5 series in the Malaysian market.

Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro users in Malaysia can now use the Samsung Health Monitor app on their smartphones to check their ECG and blood pressure. This can help users diagnose heart-related problems early and then consult a doctor for possible rescue measures. This feature is only available for the Galaxy Watch 5 series when the smartwatch is paired with a Samsung Galaxy smartphone.

To measure blood pressure, Galaxy Watch 5 Series users must set up the Samsung Health Monitor app on their Galaxy smartphone, make sure the watch fits snugly on their wrist, calibrate the watch with a dedicated blood pressure measurement device, and then complete the operation.

Measuring ECG is a little easier. Simply pair the Galaxy Watch 5 Series smartwatch with your Galaxy smartphone, open the Samsung Health Monitor app on the smartwatch, and then place the finger of your other hand on the top button of the smartwatch for 30 seconds to start measuring your ECG.

Samsung recently announced a new feature that allows Galaxy Watch 5 / Pro watch users to control the zoom level of the connected phone’s camera. The update is already rolling out. The new firmware also brings a more useful feature: the ability to check the battery health of the smartwatch from a paired smartphone.

A new software update for the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro brings the ability to check battery health through the Samsung Members app on a connected phone. The new feature is called “Connected Device Diagnostics” and users can also access it from the Galaxy Wearable app on their smartphones. In addition to checking the battery health of the Galaxy Watch 5, it also allows diagnostics to be run for the smartwatch’s touchscreen, speaker and other aspects.

While this new feature won’t extend the battery life of the smartwatch, it will provide a way to keep an eye on the health so users can adjust charging habits to extend the life of the device, and diagnostics will also notify when the wearable’s battery needs to be replaced. This feature may also be released for the Galaxy Watch 4 series. The latest update of Galaxy Buds 2 Pro has also released a similar diagnostic feature.

It’s unclear if this diagnostic feature will work with older smartwatches like the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 and Galaxy Watch Active 2.
