According to Korea Economic Daily, South Korea’s Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced on Monday that it has signed a camera supply contract with a well-known American electric car manufacturer. Although Samsung Electro-Mechanics did not disclose the specific name of the customer, it is speculated that the US company may be Tesla, and the size and amount of the contract have not yet been determined.

According to the report, Samsung Electro-Mechanics is expected to provide cameras for several Tesla models, including the Cybertruck, Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y. The cameras are ultra-high-definition, with more than 5 million pixels. This is extremely valuable for Tesla as the company works on vision-based self-driving technology.

It is noticed that Samsung seems to be working hard to ensure that it becomes one of Tesla’s most important suppliers. It was reported last year that Samsung Electro-Mechanics would replace LG Innotek as Tesla’s main camera module supplier. At the time, LG provided 70 percent of Tesla’s camera modules, while Samsung supplied the remaining 30 percent.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ camera supply contract is the company’s second major order win this year, following reports in July that Samsung had been awarded a contract to supply chips for Tesla’s next-generation Hardware 5.0 computer. However, HW5 may still be a few years away. At present, Tesla is still slowly rolling out Hardware 4.0, and even the vehicle Musk used to demonstrate FSD Beta V12 is only equipped with Hardware 3.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced that it has developed the world’s largest multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) for electric vehicles. The company plans to expand its high-end electronics lineup to accelerate its penetration into the automotive electronics market.

Note: MLCC can keep current in the circuit stable, and is mostly used in smartphones, personal computers, home appliances, 5G devices and Internet of Things devices. With the introduction of various advanced technologies, the use of MLCCs in automobiles is also proliferating.

According to recent estimates, there are at least 3,000 to 10,000 MLCC components in a car, such as its powertrain, safety components, driving-related equipment and infotainment systems.

According to reports, the MLCC developed by Samsung Electro-Mechanics is developed as a component for electric vehicles. It is 33nF (125 degrees Celsius) at 250V and 10µF (125 degrees Celsius) at 100V. As a result, MLCCs can now handle the highest capacitance in the industry among MLCCs at the same voltage.

According to TheElec, Samsung Electro-Mechanics is researching, developing and manufacturing oxide solid-state batteries for IT equipment. Meanwhile, affiliate Samsung SDI plans to focus on ceramic sulfide solid-state batteries. The company plans to start operating a battery test line within the second quarter of this year.

In simple terms, solid-state batteries use solid-state electrolytes instead of liquid electrolytes in current commercial batteries, and this also means that it does not require a separator, which greatly reduces the possibility of battery fire while also increasing the energy density of the battery. enable them to support longer periods of use.

It is found that the current research on solid-state batteries in the industry mainly focuses on ceramic (sulfide and oxide) and polyimide types, while some combine these two materials. Samsung Electro-Mechanics is focusing its research on ceramic oxide types, the sources said.

According to reports, oxide materials are relatively stable and easy to handle. Since IT products are primarily portable devices, the company prioritizes their stability, which also means they can be more easily mass-produced.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced that the company has developed an automotive semiconductor substrate (FCBGA, Flip Chip-Ball Grid Array) suitable for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), expanding the products of high-end automotive semiconductor substrates lineup, Samsung Electro-Mechanics plans to supply the product to customers around the world.

Samsung said the newly developed FCBGA is suitable for high-performance autonomous driving systems and is one of the highest-tech products in automotive electronics.

According to reports, the circuit line width and spacing in this newly developed substrate are reduced by 20%, and it also realizes more than 10,000 bumps in a limited space (see the figure below for what is a bump), so you can design a With higher density semiconductors, the performance and efficiency of chips based on this substrate will also be improved accordingly. In addition, it addresses reliability issues, including improved flexural strength, for multi-chip packages that mount multiple chips simultaneously on a single substrate.

FC-BGA package can provide better electrical characteristics, and greatly increase pin density, reduce interference, improve heat dissipation performance, and reduce package size, so as to meet the needs of high-end products and high-performance products. Chip bumps are one of the key components in the FC interconnection structure. They have three main functions: forming an electrical connection between the chip and the substrate, forming a structural connection between the chip and the substrate, and providing heat dissipation for the chip.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics said that the new product has obtained AEC-Q100 certification, the reliability test standard for automotive electronic components, and can be used in various fields from body and chassis to infotainment and autonomous driving.

July 18 news, according to foreign media reports, earlier this month, sources revealed that Samsung Electro-Mechanics beat LG Innotek and ZhiXin Electronics in the bidding for a large order for Tesla’s camera module, the order amount is expected to be 4 trillion – 5 trillion won, that is, in the 3.2-4 billion U.S. dollars.

And foreign media reports also show that after the new big order of more than $ 3 billion, Samsung Electro-Mechanics will also replace LG Innotek to become Tesla’s largest camera module supplier.

Foreign media reports mentioned in the report, to last year Tesla required camera modules, 70% is supplied by LG Innotek, and Samsung Electric supplied the remaining 30%. But the industry chain sources revealed that after getting new orders, Samsung Electro-Mechanics supply will be close to 80%, LG Innotek’s supply will drop to 20%.

In the field of camera modules, Samsung Electro-Mechanics has not been involved for a long time. Foreign media reports mentioned that Samsung Electro-Mechanics only entered the camera module field in 2010. With the decline in the price of smartphone camera modules, Samsung Electro-Mechanics began to focus on more profitable automotive camera modules in 2020.

As an important manufacturer under Samsung, Samsung Electro-Mechanics also supplies camera modules to Samsung Electronics for the Galaxy series of smartphones, and they received 498 billion won in orders from Samsung Electronics last year alone.

From what sources have revealed, according to the agreement reached between the two companies, the camera modules Samsung Electro-Mechanics supplies to Tesla will be used in all of their models in production, that is, Model 3, Model Y, ModelS and Model X will be used, but also in the Cybertruck, an electric pickup truck, and the Tesla Semi, an electric truck, both of which are not yet in production of electric vehicles.
