Most of the technology manufacturers in the Cologne International Game Show showed some new or soon to be released new products, such as ASRock showing its “half a generation” updated version of the Z790 motherboards, these new motherboards use the RTL8125-BG chip, instead of the June Computex show on the prototype RTL8126-CG. The new motherboards all use the RTL8125-BG chip, rather than the RTL8126-CG used in the prototypes at Computex in June.

Dutch media Tweakers learned from a number of motherboard manufacturers attending the Cologne International Game Show that the Realtek 5GbE wired NIC chip RTL8126-CG, while cheaper, will not be carried on the motherboards launched this fall due to stability issues.

Realtek is reportedly working on fixing such issues, but they won’t be able to resolve them before new motherboards hit the market this fall, so we may have to wait for the next generation of motherboards used by AMD Zen 5 and Intel Arrow Lake processors to come out before we’ll see the chip, which aren’t expected to launch until the second half of next year.

The Realtek RTL8126-CG is based on the PCIe 3.0 x1 interface and is smaller and cheaper than Marvell’s existing 5Gbit and 10Gbit/s offerings.

The Realtek RTL8126-CG is said to be a miniature QFN56 chip measuring 8x8mm and consuming a maximum of 1.7W, and is actually supposed to be the successor to the RTL8125-BG, which is expected to be purchased for only $5 (currently around RMB 36), or at least $20-$30 for most of the similar products on the market today.

Realtek stated that fair competition can promote innovation and progress in the semiconductor industry, but unfair competition violates the Antitrust Act and will hurt corporate innovation because it will waste company resources that could have been used to invest in further R&D and innovation. Realtek emphasized that it will firmly defend the public interest and will donate the compensation obtained from this lawsuit to public welfare.

MediaTek responded that the patent lawsuit has entered the judicial process and it is inconvenient to comment on this.

It was previously reported that chipmaker Realtek Semiconductor sued rival MediaTek in the Northern California Federal Court on Tuesday, accusing the latter of reaching a secret agreement with a company specializing in patent litigation to pay a “litigation bounty” to Realtek launched baseless patent lawsuits in an attempt to disrupt Realtek’s business and monopolize the chip market for smart TVs and set-top boxes.

Chipmaker Realtek Semiconductor sued rival MediaTek Inc in the Northern California Federal Court on Tuesday, accusing the latter of reaching a secret agreement with a company specializing in patent litigation, to pay “litigation bounties” to launch baseless patent lawsuits against Realtek in an attempt to disrupt Realtek’s business and monopolize the chip market for smart TVs and set-top boxes.

Realtek said in the complaint that MediaTek and Future Link Systems LLC, a subsidiary of IPValue Management Inc, signed a patent license agreement in 2019 that contained a secret “litigation bounty” agreement that was involved in Future Link’s lawsuit last year. It was exposed in patent litigation in the United States West Texas Federal Court and the United States International Trade Commission (ITC). Realtek said Future Link had been trying to “hide details of the agreement under confidentiality obligations and protective orders.”

Realtek said MediaTek used the patent lawsuits to try to remove its allegedly infringing chips from the market, while suggesting to customers that Realtek might be an “unreliable supplier” to the TV chip industry. Realtek is asking the court to order the two companies to stop the alleged conspiracy and seek an undisclosed amount of monetary damages.

According to the complaint, MediaTek owns nearly 60 percent of the global TV chip market. In a statement, Realtek said it filed the lawsuit to “protect free and fair competition in the industry” and “prevent further harm to the public.”

As of press time, MediaTek and IPValue have not commented on the lawsuit.

The ITC had called the agreement “appalling” and said it was “likely to be improper and accountable,” while the West Texas court called it “inappropriate” and “should be governed by public policy.” Future Link quickly settled patent lawsuits with several tech companies, including MediaTek rival Amlogic, following the ITC’s criticism.

According to TechPowerUp, Realtek demonstrated its latest Wi-Fi 7 client module at the Taipei Computer Show, model RTL8922AE.

As shown in the figure above, the RTL8922AE Wi-Fi 7 module is available in M.2 2230 format and 1620 soldered modules.

According to official tests, the latest Wi-Fi 7 module can achieve a transmission rate of 1948Mbps. Officials also ran another wireless connection during the test to simulate real-world interference scenarios.

In addition, the RTL8922AE module also supports Bluetooth 5.4 protocol, improved BLE audio and Auracast technology.

According to the official specification sheet, this Wi-Fi 7 module can reach a rate of 2880Mbps when utilizing both 5GHz and 6GHz band bandwidth. It should be noted that this module is temporarily limited to 160 MHz channels, while WiFi 7 can support 320 MHz channels.

According to foreign media, the RTL8922AE Wi-Fi 7 module is expected to be launched to customers in the fourth quarter of this year, and may not appear on the market until early 2024.

In terms of router solutions, Realtek showed the latest roadmap, including BE3600, 6400, 6500 dual-band models and BE7200, 9400 tri-band models, which will be launched as early as the third quarter of 2024. It can be seen from the model number that Realtek mainly targets the low-end market of WiFi 7 routers.
