A week after the release of Android 13 QPR2 Beta 3, Google has once again released the latest update for its Android 13 quarterly update testbed, version QPR2 Beta 3.1.

Although it’s not a major update, version T2B3.230109.004 does contain some important bug fixes.

According to the release notes published by Google, there are two bugs fixed in this version, one of them is a problem with the system’s Bluetooth module that “may allow out-of-bounds writes due to memory corruption” and the second one is a fix for some missing Romanian translations in the system.

For those who are currently running the beta version, you can access the “System Update” screen through the “System” section of the “Settings” menu and start the update. This version is only about 21MB in size and is expected to download quickly.

For those who have never used the Android Beta, you will need to sign up to the Android Beta program first to receive the update push.

Of course, you can also download the firmware manually, but it’s best to back up your important data on your phone first. The Android beta is currently only available for Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel 5, Pixel 5a, Pixel 6 series or Pixel 7 series devices.

According to some Samsung Galaxy S23 series users, the new machine’s pre-installed Android 13 system occupies a lot of storage space, up to 60GB, four times larger than the Pixel 7.

For reference, the Pixel 7 series’ Android 13 system only takes up about 15GB of storage space. 60GB is also twice the size of the Windows 11 system, taking up almost half of the storage space of the 128GB version of the Galaxy S23.

The reason the Samsung Galaxy S23 series system takes up so much space is that the new machines come with many Google apps and Samsung has a set of its own apps, so there will be two similar sets of apps. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S23 series has both Samsung Messages and Google Messages installed, and both cannot be uninstalled.

In addition, Samsung tends to sell space on its devices. This means that companies like Facebook can buy a spot on a Samsung phone and add it to Samsung’s system partition, and what’s more odious is that many of these apps can’t be uninstalled.

However, Sammobile points out that the amount of space taken up by the Samsung Galaxy S23 series system is also related to models in different regions, mainly affecting models in Western markets like the U.S. and Europe, for example, below is a screenshot of storage information for the Indian Galaxy S23 Ultra (left) and the Dutch Galaxy S23 Ultra, you can see that the Indian version of the system For example, below is a screenshot of the storage information for the Indian Galaxy S23 Ultra (left) and the Dutch Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Google has made available repair manuals for the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, but only for French users to view.

Google’s “Learn more about Pixel repair manuals” support article has been geo-restricted to French users only, and viewing it from anywhere else in the world will return a “Sorry, can’t find this page” message, which wasn’t the case last July.

Users can use the Pixel repair manual to try to fix the problems encountered with the phone and have it repaired. The manual provides step-by-step instructions on how to “repair a damaged Pixel phone with genuine parts; disassemble the Pixel phone and put it back together; remove and replace parts; extend the life of the phone and protect the environment.

It is recommended that only independent repair professionals and users with appropriate technical experience should repair their own phones, as they may face safety risks or damage the device.

In starting in 2021, France requires manufacturers of smartphones (and other devices such as laptops and TVs) to provide a repairability index. This is a score out of 10, applied by manufacturers themselves based on percentages, where one criterion for smartphones is published documentation.

The update is available for the Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel 5, Pixel 5a, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro.

The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro have gained three features in this update. One is to lower the threshold for accessing virtual private networks, no longer need to subscribe to 2TB and higher packages, and Google One subscribers can use it for free. Google said that Workspace and some supervised accounts (including child accounts) are not eligible, and Indian and Singapore devices are not within the scope of this upgrade.

The second is an update to the Recorder app. The Speaker tab in the Recorder app has been redesigned and tweaked to support detecting and tagging multiple speakers. The app previously transcribed all speech as a text block (as it was originally intended for lectures/lectures), but Google will now detect each person and add line breaks when the speaker changes. Each will be assigned a number, color and shape for a more resolvable Recorder experience. Pixel 6, 6 Pro, and 6a also support this feature.

The third new feature is the Clear Calling feature. This feature filters out background noise and enhances voice, so calls can be heard clearly even in noisy environments. Visit Settings > Sounds & Vibration > Clear Calls to enable/disable. This feature doesn’t work with VOIP calls, and Google says it’s based on the Tensor G2 chip.

On October 29th news, earlier this month Pixel 7 series can only run 64-bit applications, and now Google has officially confirmed the news.

In a blog post on its developer site, Google has revealed some information about its Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro phones. According to Google, the Pixel 7 series is the first ever pure 64-bit Android phone.

Google said that in order to achieve this “feat”, it needed to make various changes “across the platform, tools, Google Play, and of course apps”.

So what’s in it for users? Google points out that 64-bit apps run faster than 32-bit apps because they can use additional registers and instructions that 32-bit apps can’t use. In addition, newer CPUs can provide up to a 25 percent performance boost when running 64-bit code, with some processors even dropping support for 32-bit code altogether.

In addition, it can help improve security. A larger address space makes defenses like ASLR more effective, and spare bits can be used to protect the integrity of the control flow. These countermeasures can reduce the chances of an intruder taking control of the device.

Google also says that removing support for 32-bit code can save up to 150MB of RAM, because the operating system uses that memory even when not running 32-bit applications. These memory savings mean that there are fewer memory shortages, which means fewer background kill situations.

For developers, developers can use better tools, such as HWASan, for detecting memory errors and improving the quality of their applications. For vendors, pure 64-bit devices cut CTS testing time in half, and vendors can update devices faster and easier.

Google also said that pure 32-bit devices remain important for Android Go, Android TV and Android Wear, and that Google Play will continue to offer 32-bit apps for pure 32-bit devices.

Google has reportedly made several references to Apple’s iPhone 14, iOS 16 and Apple’s reluctance to adopt RCS messaging during its latest launch event. At the new event yesterday, Google unveiled the Pixel Watch, Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, and revealed new details about the Pixel tablet. During this event, some of the keynote speakers couldn’t resist mocking Apple’s previous releases of new devices.

Google Pixel 7 Pro

Brian Rakowski, Vice President of Product Management at Google, said of the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro: “Pixel has always been a leader in smartphone innovation. We take it as a compliment when others in the industry follow in our footsteps, like the always-on display and the At a Glance feature, which puts useful information on your lock screen. His comments allude to iOS 16’s Live Activities and iPhone 14 Pro’s always-on screen feature.”

“We introduced the Crash Monitoring feature three years ago, along with other important ways to keep users safe, such as Safety Check and Emergency Share.” Last month, Apple introduced Car Crash Detection in iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro and the latest Apple Watch, while iOS 16 brought Safety Check to users to keep them safe. Rakowski concluded, “It’s an amazing track record that they are all on groundbreaking features pioneered on the Pixel.”

One of the biggest differences between Apple and Google is Apple’s refusal to adopt RCS messaging support, the latest and increasingly common messaging standard. Despite Google’s public calls for Apple to adopt RCS, Apple continues to limit messaging on its devices to the SMS standard and iMessage. Apple CEO Tim Cook has responded to these calls, saying that this is not something Apple users are asking the company to do.

In this launch, Google is again pressuring Apple to change direction. “RCS is the industry standard for modern messaging, and it has been adopted by most industries. We want every device manufacturer to embrace this standard and adopt RCS so that every smartphone user has better access to messaging capabilities.”

The Pixel 7 series has finally been released and is now available for pre-order, and with it comes a lot of new features for the new phones. One feature that many Pixel users have been waiting for is the face unlock feature, which is finally being supported on the Pixel 7 series. However, the feature doesn’t seem to be as comprehensive as some had hoped.

Blogger Andreas Proschofsky points out that the face unlock feature on the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro can only be used to unlock the phone. This means that it can’t be used for other authentication purposes, such as mobile payments or password managers.

According to Proschofsky, Google says that the feature is classified as a Type 1 biometric, which means that it is not for security purposes, but only for “convenience”. Google has also confirmed this to media outlets Android Police, telling them that the feature can only be used to unlock the phone.

hone

While Google touted its machine learning capabilities when introducing the Pixel 7’s face unlock, it makes sense for the company to limit the feature. Because the phone doesn’t have the necessary hardware to provide secure facial recognition capabilities, it’s quite possible to fool the face recognition system without dedicated hardware.

The Pixel 7 and 7 Pro also support under-screen fingerprinting, so it’s best to avoid using the face unlock feature if security is very important.

At a hardware event in Brooklyn on Thursday, Google officially unveiled its long-awaited Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones. Interestingly, while emphasizing safety, voice and camera features, the company also briefly showcased a health feature on the slide — cough and snoring detection. Specifically, on the daily bedtime summary screen, the Pixel will be able to show how long a user snores and how many times they cough during sleep.

With user permission, the digital health app can help you understand the quality of your sleep by analyzing the audio of coughing and snoring at night, and the data can be processed locally on Pixel 7,” Google executives said.

In late September, app researcher Mishaal Rahman also showed the settings screen for this feature in a tweet ahead of the Pixel 7’s official launch.

The screen shows that the cough and snore detection feature only requires the Pixel 7’s microphone, and there’s no need to record or share data with anyone.

If you’re interested, you can enable the feature by going to the “Bedtime” section of the Clock App, as described on the Google support page.

Alternatively, you can go to the “Settings → Digital Health & Parental Controls → Show coughing and snoring activity” page to see the data.

It is not yet known whether this feature will be available “out of the box” or if it will have to wait for an update to be released.
