NVIDIA announced today at CES 2024 that Li Auto has selected the NVIDIA DRIVE Thor central vehicle computer for its next model.

NVIDIA also announced partnerships with automakers GWM, ZEEKR and Xiaomi, which have adopted the NVIDIA DRIVE Orin platform to power their intelligent autonomous driving systems.

NVIDIA Automotive Vice President Wu Xinzhou said: “The transportation industry is adopting centralized computing to achieve a high degree of automation and self-driving. The AI automotive computer of choice for today’s smart cars is NVIDIA DRIVE Orin, and automakers are increasingly looking to its successor NVIDIA DRIVE Thor’s advanced features and AI performance to shape the future vehicle roadmap.”

According to reports, DRIVE Thor is NVIDIA’s next-generation centralized automotive computer that integrates a wide range of intelligent functions into a single AI computing platform, providing autonomous driving and parking functions, driver and passenger monitoring, and AI cockpit functions.

Li Auto currently uses two DRIVE Orin processors to power its AD Max, an assisted driving system in its L-series models. The new AD Max 3.0 upgrade transitions the system to an end-to-end algorithm architecture dominated by AI large models.

Great Wall Motor announced that it will build Coffee Pilot, a self-developed high-end intelligent driving system based on the DRIVE Orin centralized computing platform. Coffee Pilot can support parking, highway and urban scenes, realizing full-scenario intelligent navigation and assisted driving functions without the need for high-precision maps.

It is learned from the announcement that Great Wall Motors and Nvidia have cooperated to develop this intelligent driving system and will launch the first model equipped with this system in the first half of this year. Smart driving functions such as NOA city navigation assisted driving and cross-level memory parking will be first launched on Great Wall Wei brand models.

Xiaomi Motors has announced the launch of its first electric car, SU7, which is based on a dual DRIVE Orin configuration and can achieve highway assisted driving functions.

NVIDIA announced that starting next year, BYD, the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer, will use the NVIDIA Drive Orin centralized computing platform in its full range of vehicles, further expanding the use of DRIVE Orin in multiple models of its Dynasty and Ocean series vehicles to bring safer and smarter vehicles to market.

Both NVIDIA and BYD believe that the future of the automobile will be programmable, evolving from being based on many embedded controllers to high-performance centralized computers — with software updates to deliver and enhance functionality throughout the vehicle’s lifecycle.

The DRIVE Orin is described as the most powerful automotive processor on the market today and has been the AI engine of choice for the industry’s next generation of new energy vehicles, robotic cabs, shuttles and trucks since it went into production last year.

The first choice of automakers for the 2022 production schedule, NVIDIA DRIVE Orin includes.

Up to 21 billion transistors

Integrated NVIDIA Ampere GPU architecture

12 Cortex-A78 ARM 64 CPUs

Deep learning and computer vision gas pedal

Can deliver 254 trillion operations per second performance

It’s worth noting that BYD also announced earlier this year that it will enhance the in-car experience by introducing NVIDIA GeForce NOW cloud gaming services.
