According to overseas media reports, according to data from the Japan Automobile Dealers Association, Japan’s new car sales in 2023 will be 4.779 million units, a year-on-year increase of 13.8%, achieving the first growth in five years. However, sales in 2023 failed to surpassing the pre-pandemic level in 2019.

The agency attributes the increase in sales to the fact that the shortage of semiconductor chips has been alleviated and manufacturers have increased production. At the same time, 2022 is also the lowest level of Japanese car sales in 45 years, with approximately 4.2 million vehicles.

Local brands account for the vast majority of cars sold in Japan. Seven of the nine major brands have achieved growth in 2023, and only Mitsubishi and Daihatsu have seen sales decline. Among them, Daihatsu’s sales fell by 22.6% in December due to the safety test fraud scandal.

In terms of brands, Toyota sold 1.5486 million new cars in Japan, a year-on-year increase of 27.2%; Lexus sold 94,600 units, an increase of 2.3 times; Nissan sold 291,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 7%; Honda sold 275,700 units, A year-on-year increase of 2.5%.

An official from the Japan Light Vehicle Association said that the launch of new models and the resumption of production will help solve the backlog of orders, but inflation still puts certain pressure on sales.

Nissan is accelerating its transformation to electric vehicles. It has also previously announced that it will phase out fuel vehicles and plans to achieve 100% electrification in Europe by 2030.

Last week, the company revealed that it will invest 3 billion pounds to produce three new electric vehicles at its Sunderland plant, including two new electric models and the next-generation LEAF . It is said that the new car will undergo major upgrades.

The next-generation Nissan Leaf will be launched late next year, a Nissan source told Automotive News Europe.

Nissan also plans to transform its two best-selling SUVs, the Juke and Qashqai, into fully electric models. The Qashqai was said to be the best-selling car in the UK last year, while the Juke has sold more than 1 million units.

The new electric cars will be based on Nissan concept cars, with the Qashqai likely to be inspired by the Hyper Urban concept, while the Hyper Punk concept also appears to be an inspiration for the Juke.

Dataforce research shows Nissan Leaf sales in Europe fell 31% to 11,568 units in the year to October. Meanwhile, Chinese rivals such as BYD and SAIC MG are experiencing rapid growth.

Nissan sources revealed that the next-generation Leaf will be closer to the Nissan Ariya, the brand’s first electric SUV model. Nissan says the next-generation Leaf will be designed with reference to its Chill-Out concept car.

This concept car is based on the CMF-EV platform used by Nissan Ariya, and it is also equipped with Nissan’s e-4ORCE electric four-wheel drive control system. The new Leaf will be “completely redesigned” and does not seem to intend to inherit the previous two modern design features.

Its batteries will come from Nissan’s battery factory currently under construction. The energy density of the new generation battery (Gen5) will be 30% higher than the 62 kWh battery currently used in the Nissan Leaf, which can increase the range to 239 miles (about 385 kilometers). , on par with the Volkswagen ID.3 (343 miles of range on a 77 kWh battery).

Despite calls this summer for EV owners to refrain from charging during peak hours to ease the pressure on the grid. But with the growing popularity of electric vehicles, we may also want to think about EVs delivering energy in the opposite direction to help the grid easily regulate peaks in the future. This article introduces Nissan’s first Vehicle-to-Grid adapter for LEAF owners.

(From: Nissan official website)

As the name implies, the V2G adapter allows vehicle owners to sell surplus electricity back to the grid. Although Nissan is not the first to do so, this move has a greater symbolic significance.

"For owners with home chargers, they can meet their daily commuting needs while taking advantage of the nighttime valley power to fully charge their vehicles and then feed some of that energy back to the grid during the day.

The result is a win-win situation - EV owners earn the difference between peak and valley power, and the grid reduces the cost of utility coverage during peak hours."

The Nissan Leaf was reportedly first introduced to the market in 2010. Despite some ups and downs in the industry, the Nissan Leaf was the best-selling EV model in the European market in the first half of 2018 with 37,000 orders / 18,000 deliveries.

For reference, the Ford F-150 Lighting and Mustang Mache-e only reached 32,607 sales in August 2022 – and the Nissan Leaf was a full era ahead.

While the Nissan Leaf is not as hot as it once was in a highly competitive market, the car actually has an intensive that has been hidden for years — all Nissan Leafs since 2013, have the two-way charging capability.

Unfortunately, until then, the U.S. market has lacked charging units that could take advantage of this feature. The good news is that Nissan is finally offering a V2G power adapter option for LEAF owners today.

"The company announced Wednesday that it is offering the first V2G chargers to LEAF owners. In partnership with Fermata Energy, owners will be able to sell surplus power to the grid with the FE-15 two-way power adapter.

This can be easily accomplished by simply parking the car and plugging in the FE-15. It's also worth noting that the Nissan Leaf is the only all-electric passenger car on the U.S. market today that can supply energy to the grid."

Electrek notes that V2G technology makes the Nissan LEAF ideal for both commercial and residential customers. In addition to individual vehicle owners, businesses can use Fermata Energy’s energy demand management application to power their buildings during peak times.

The service monitors electricity consumption in the office and calls on backup V2G energy when electricity prices are high.
