Recently, Nissan Motor Company and Mitsubishi Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation, which includes jointly developing next-generation mobility services and developing new electric vehicle energy application businesses. This move will help solve regional social problems, such as driver shortages due to aging and declining birthrates, and Japanese social problems such as the unsustainability of public transportation services due to a reduction in the number of users.

Nissan and Mitsubishi believe that new technologies and service models need to be built to solve problems in these specific areas. To achieve this, the two companies will leverage their respective expertise and experience to commercialize next-generation mobility and electric vehicle-related energy services, starting in Japan.

Nissan’s measures include: providing mobile travel services in Namie Town, Fukushima Prefecture, and conducting autonomous driving tests in the Minato Mirai District of Yokohama, Japan, to help more users realize autonomous driving travel. At the same time, Nissan is developing an energy management system that combines the charging and discharging functions of pure electric vehicle batteries with renewable energy.

“Mitsubishi Minicab MiEV”

Mitsubishi Corporation will cooperate with partners and local governments, including: 1. Make full use of local energy sources such as renewable energy. 2. Achieve carbon neutrality. 3. Create more attractive communities by solving local social problems. In the field of mobility, Mitsubishi Corporation has been taking new measures to address transportation issues in Japan, such as providing on-demand transportation solutions based on artificial intelligence to local governments and private companies, including Shiojiri City in Nagano Prefecture. and conduct autonomous driving tests.

Japanese automaker Nissan today announced a revitalization plan called “The Arc”. The company will launch 30 new models in the next two years, 16 of which will use electrified powertrains. The remaining models are upgraded fuel vehicles.

The plan shows that Nissan will launch six new models in the European market and strive to have its electric vehicles account for 40% of sales in the European market by 2026.

It is noted that Nissan also plans to significantly accelerate its electrification process after 2026 and launch 20 more hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure electric models. Nissan expects electrified vehicles to account for 40% of its global sales by 2026, rising to 60% by 2030.

Reducing the cost of electric vehicles is an important part of Nissan’s “The Arc” plan. They plan to use next-generation battery technology and new R&D and production processes to bring the price of electric vehicles in line with fuel vehicles.

Like many car companies, Nissan will also adopt a “family-based” R&D approach based on specific electric vehicle architecture to reduce costs. The first model based on the new platform will be launched in 2027. The development cycle of subsequent models based on this platform will be shortened by four months and the cost will be halved.

Platform sharing will also enable Nissan to adopt new modular manufacturing methods that will reduce production time by 20 percent. Nissan will also work with Honda and other partners to jointly purchase parts and components to further reduce costs.

Nissan says it will make a “significant upgrade” to the nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries used in the current Ariya electric SUV, doubling its energy density and cutting charging time in half. Additionally, Nissan claims they will also launch a 30% lower cost lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack in 2028 alongside next-generation solid-state batteries.

After all the interest that Nissan was successful at gathering for its Leaf model, the company has surprisingly taken a call to discontinue this model, as reported by a new report.

Nissan Leaf

The decision may not seem so startling if we consider that what Leaf was using was old technology. It carried the small 24kWh and 30kWh batteries which weren’t assisted with the modern battery-protecting cooling technology. You may want to argue that the newer generation of Nissan Leaf did carry some upgrades like the 40kWh and 62 kWh batteries and the use of a motor that drew more power. However, all the technology inside these new generation cars was essentially very similar to that in the older generation models.

Nissan Ariya

A glimpse of what Nissan wants to offer through its future cars is evident when we look at Nissan Ariya. It has a range of batteries, all of which are liquid cooled. The model offers multiple powertrain and range options.

Nissan Ariya

With Ariya, Nissan seems to have given away the sharp, angular lines that have been evident on so many of its previous models. The car would be offered as a front-wheel or all-wheel drive. The car comes loaded with a bunch of driver-assistance features, infotainment tech, and convenience items. The car also features Nissan’s new semi-autonomous driving system (ProPilot 2.0). Ariya promises to offer a range of up to 300 miles. However, this optimum range is attained only when using the optional dual-front/rear motor drive configuration and the larger 87.0 kWh battery pack. While the Leaf would leave forever the platforms inside of Nissan’s manufacturing units, the company is working on a new entry-level EV for the public.
