Nikola also has contracts with some hydrogen producers. The manufacturer agrees to supply hydrogen for Nikola vehicles in the US and parts of Canada. Nikola seeks to provide enough hydrogen to fuel approximately 7,500 heavy-duty trucks by 2026.

The planned supply network is critical to Nikola’s strategy to begin assembling hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks for the market later this year, the report said. Unlike battery electric vehicles, which can be recharged with electricity in many existing locations, Nikola’s trucks require hydrogen to keep going.

It is worth mentioning that Nikola’s name is similar to Tesla, in memory of a physicist – Nikola Tesla.

The company expects all affected vehicles to have this safety defect. Owners will need to take their vehicles to a dealer, who will replace the seat belt retainer assembly and adjuster for the vehicle free of charge.

NHTSA said the defect was discovered by a Nikola employee during a pre-delivery inspection on July 18. Between August and September of this year, Iveco (the cab manufacturer) notified Nikola that “the final torque installation of the passenger seat belt shoulder anchorages did not meet specifications and was prone to cross-threading, and that this condition may exist on other trucks. After investigation, Nikola determined that “the original design of the seat belt shoulder anchor could have been improved by reducing the size of the spacer between the bolt and the adjuster”.

The company has not received any reported warranty claims or customer claims related to this defect. The recall also had an unintended effect: it let the outside world know how many Nikola Tre’s the company had produced. Nikola began delivering the first Tre all-electric trucks to customers in April of this year, and to date, the company has produced close to 100 Tre’s, which is not a bad achievement. The company’s vehicle production site is Coolidge, Ariz.

According to Collider, Loschelle previously held the position of chief financial officer (CFO) at Volkswagen Group of America for less than five years.

He joined Nicola as president in February 2022 and has already achieved some notable accomplishments, including making a significant impact in driving the series production of the Tre all-electric vehicle and achieving development milestones for the Tre fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV).

Prior to joining Nicola, he was CEO of Opel, leading the company to sustainable profitability and overseeing its transformation into a leading electric vehicle brand.

According to foreign media reports, Locherer will succeed Mark Russell as CEO and immediately join Nicola’s board of directors, while Russell, Nicola’s current CEO and president, will retire on Jan. 1, 2023. Although Russell will retire from the CEO position, he will remain a member of the company’s board of directors.

Russell, 59, joins Nicola as president in 2019 and succeeds Nicola founder Trevor Milton as CEO in 2020. Milton is reportedly accused of lying about the company’s situation and deceiving investors.
