The United States video streaming service provider Netflix today announced the company’s third-quarter fiscal year 2023 financial results. According to the report, the company’s third-quarter revenue was $8.542 billion, an increase of 7.8% compared with $7.926 billion in the same period last year; net profit was $1.677 billion, an increase of 20% compared with $1.398 billion in the same period last year; and earnings per share were $3.73, compared with $3.10 in the same period last year.

Netflix’s third-quarter revenue and earnings per share exceeded Wall Street analysts’ previous expectations, and the total number of paid subscribers to the global streaming service and the number of new paid subscribers worldwide also exceeded expectations, driving its stock price up more than 12% after hours.

It’s worth pointing out that Netflix added the highest number of new paid subscribers globally in the third quarter since the second quarter of 2020 (when 10.1 million new paid subscribers were added globally), when people were forced to stay at home due to restrictions caused by the new crown epidemic.
Key performance:

Netflix reported net income of $1.677 billion for the fiscal quarter ended Sept. 30, up 20% from $1.398 billion a year earlier, and earnings per share of $3.73 versus $3.10 a year earlier, a result that beat analysts’ previous estimates. According to data provided by Yahoo Finance, 34 analysts previously expected Netflix’s third-quarter earnings to reach an average of $3.49 per share.

Netflix’s third-quarter revenue was $8.542 billion, up 7.8 percent from $7.926 billion a year earlier, also slightly exceeding analysts’ expectations. According to data provided by Yahoo Finance, 31 analysts on average expected Netflix’s third-quarter revenue to reach $8.54 billion.

Geographically, Netflix’s third-quarter streaming revenue from the U.S. and Canada was $3.735 billion, compared with $3.602 billion a year ago; from EMEA, $2.693 billion, compared with $2.376 billion a year ago; and from Latin America, $1.143 billion, compared with $1.043 billion in the same period last year. Revenue from Latin America was $1.143 billion, compared to $1.024 billion in the same period last year, and revenue from Asia Pacific was $948 million, compared to $889 million in the same period last year.

Netflix reported a third-quarter operating profit of $1.916 billion, compared with $1.533 billion in the same period last year, and an operating margin of 22.4%, compared with 19.3% in the same period last year.

Netflix’s third-quarter net cash from operating activities was $1.992 billion, compared to $557 million in the same period last year, and free cash flow was $1.888 billion, compared to $472 million in the same period last year. Netflix now expects free cash flow for the full year of fiscal 2023 to be approximately $6.5 billion, which is consistent with its previous expectation of at least $5.0 billion. Netflix now expects free cash flow to be around $6.5 billion for the full year of fiscal 2023, a significant upward revision from its previous estimate of at least $5 billion.

Netflix’s cost of revenue for the third quarter was $4.931 billion, compared with $4.789 billion in the same period last year; marketing expenses were $559 million, compared with $568 million in the same period last year; technology and development expenses were $657 million, compared with $663 million in the same period last year; and general and administrative expenses were $479 million, compared with $373 million in the same period last year.

Netflix repurchased $2.5 billion worth of stock in the third quarter and expanded the size of its authorized share repurchase program by $10 billion.

Netflix ad program membership grew nearly 70% sequentially in the third quarter, and its ad program, which costs $6.99 per month for a monthly subscription in the U.S. market, continued to support the growth of its ad program.
Subscriber Data:

Netflix’s worldwide paid subscriber base for the streaming service totalled 247.15 million in the third quarter, up 10.8% from 223.09 million a year ago.

BEIJING, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) — Streaming video service giant Netflix will release its third-quarter earnings report on Thursday, and is expected to increase the number of subscribers by about 6 million in the third quarter, boosted by its policy of restricting account sharing.

Netflix is also widely expected to raise the price of its subscription service in the coming months.

Netflix is the only major streaming company that is currently profitable, but the company hasn’t joined the ranks of competitors like Disney in raising the price of its ad-free subscription service this year. Instead, Netflix is appealing to the more than 100 million subscribers who use its service but haven’t yet subscribed by limiting account sharing outside of the home.

In response, Bernstein analysts said, “Today, Netflix is very similar to a utility company. But the challenge with being labeled a ‘utility company’ is how to continue to grow for a company that is already mature.”

Earlier this month it was reported that Netflix would be raising prices in several markets around the world in the months following the end of the Hollywood actors’ strike, with the U.S. and Canada taking the brunt of the increase. This means that Netflix is likely to announce the price hike during its earnings meeting this week.

In July, Hollywood suffered its first simultaneous writers’ and actors’ strike since 1960. Last week, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) ratified a previous deal with a number of major studios, including Netflix, under which Netflix, Disney +, Hulu, and a number of other streaming services will share streaming data with the WGA, allowing screenwriters to see how hot the content they’re writing is.

Last year, Netflix launched a subscription service with ads, but progress has been slow. Analysts said they expect Netflix to raise the price of its ad-free subscription service in the coming months.

Analysts said most of Netflix’s viewers opted for an ad-free subscription service after the introduction of a policy banning account sharing. Netflix’s service with ads is priced at $6.99 per month, while the ad-free service starts at $15.49.

It’s worth noting that Netflix already had an across-the-board price hike last year, with ad-free subscriptions going up to at least $15.49 per month, and Premium subscriptions going up to $19.99 per month (currently around RMB 146).

In addition, the company also introduced a $6.99 per month package with ads and also canceled the $9.99 per month basic ad-free package.

The Brazilian court approved the expert report of the digital video company DivX and implemented the previous preliminary injunction against Netflix, ordering Netflix to pay approximately US$3.27 million to the court accrued and retroactive fines, the case will now enter the full trial stage.

It is understood that DivX is suing Netflix for infringement of its patent number PI 0506163-6, which targets a “deblocking” tool implemented in High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) encoded files. DivX says Netflix’s streaming in HEVC infringes the patent.

It is noted that DivX stated in its brief to the court requesting a preliminary injunction that the case was “the longest patent infringement lawsuit in Brazil’s information technology field” and had been filed in October 2020. This delay “only This may be attributable to the defendant’s deliberate delaying behavior.” The interim injunction was granted in November 2020 and confirmed with modification in May 2022. Although Netflix was ordered to deposit the accrued fine amount into an account, it appealed and the court withheld the deposit until actual violations could be proven.

DivX called the ruling “an important message from the Brazilian judiciary to Netflix and all other companies that think they can infringe Brazilian patents with impunity.” The company also noted the court’s warning that “disrespectful behavior” will be leading to additional punitive measures.

Netflix has begun to adjust prices in some countries and regions today. Cord Cutters News has officially confirmed from Netflix that there has been a price increase in Turkey. It is unclear in other regions.

Briefly compare the data before and after the price increase:

The following is the data after the price increase in February this year:

  • Basic: 63.99 TRY/month (approximately RMB 17.35)
  • Standard: 97.99 TRY/month (approximately RMB 26.56)
  • Premium: 130.99 TRY/month (approximately RMB 35.51)

The following is the data after the latest price increase in Turkey:

  • Basic: 99.99 TRY/month (approximately RMB 27.10)
  • Standard: 149.99 TRY/month (approximately RMB 40.66)
  • Premium: 199.99 TRY/month (approximately RMB 54.21)

Due to the increase in subscription prices in Turkey, Netflix premium users will pay an additional 18.7 yuan per month, an increase of about 53%. Some netizens analyzed pricing in various regions and found that the country with the cheapest Netflix pricing in the world is currently Pakistan, and the most expensive country is Liechtenstein.

As Netflix begins to crack down on password sharing, coupled with a series of price increases, the company is expected to report higher revenue next quarter.

In addition, Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters said at the Goldman Sachs annual Communicopia and Technology Conference on Tuesday local time that the company hopes to continue to delve further into the advertising business.

Peters hopes to work with writers on “secondary brand narratives” in episodes, meaning entire storylines could be built around a product or campaign. He also added that he wanted to make the ad “feel more like a part of the universe.”

Netflix recently launched an app called “Game Controller” on the iPhone and iPad, which is an important step for it to enter the field of cloud gaming. Today, the company revealed more about how the app will be used and its testing plans in a blog post.

Netflix said they will conduct a limited test with select TV users in Canada and the United Kingdom, and in the coming weeks on PCs and Macs via supported browsers on the Netflix.com website. On TVs, games can be played through the “Game Controller” app on phones, and PC and Mac users can play games on Netflix.com using a keyboard and mouse. Netflix added that this limited test is to test their game streaming technology and controllers before the game platform is officially launched.

Here is a list of some smart TV platforms that are compatible with Netflix:

  • Amazon Fire TV Streaming Player
  • Chromecast with Google TV
  • LG Tv
  • Nvidia Shield TV
  • Roku devices and TV
  • Samsung Smart TV
  • Walmart ONN

Apple TV did not appear on this list because of Apple’s hostile policy towards cloud games. Apple must protect its App Store revenue stream, and allowing cloud gaming apps to appear on iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs threatens the App Store’s cash cow: mobile gaming deals.

According to Bloomberg reports, Apple’s upcoming virtual reality headset Apple Vision Pro in the market may not have Netflix’s native application, allegedly the video streaming service provider currently has no plans to develop custom applications for Apple’s headset.

The Apple Vision Pro will offer users a more immersive experience, including apps for streaming video. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman revealed in Sunday’s Power On newsletter that he’s been told that Netflix has “no plans to develop a native app for the Vision Pro at this time”.

While Netflix may not offer a native app, it will still offer some level of video streaming. Since Apple claims that developers can easily convert iPad apps to work with the Apple Vision Pro, it’s likely that Netflix will at least convert its tablet version of the app to work with the headset.

Netflix already offers more immersive streaming experiences on other VR platforms, such as the Meta Quest series, where the Netflix app offers a cosy virtual room complete with knickknacks and furniture, and of course a large virtual TV.

After the harshest crackdown on home-sharing accounts in history, Netflix recently announced the cancellation of its cheapest ad-free subscription plan, and the first to be affected is Canadian users.

▲ Photo source: Netflix, the same below

According to the report, Netflix has 4 subscription plans, including the entry-level plan for watching ads, and 3 ad-free subscription services: Basic, Standard and Premium.

Netflix has announced that it is canceling its “basic” subscription in Canada, meaning that users who do not want to watch ads will have to pay to upgrade their subscriptions, which is a price increase in disguise. Netflix said the measure is only for new members, but will not affect existing members who use the subscription plan.

Netflix emphasized that existing subscribers with the “basic” subscription package will not be able to re-subscribe to the plan once they cancel. Netflix has not yet responded to the question of whether the strategy will spread to more countries. Canada was also one of the first countries to be affected by Netflix’s crackdown on home-sharing accounts. Therefore, Netflix is likely to continue to promote this strategy.

The new Netflix subscription plans are as follows:

  • With ads: $5.99 CAD per month (currently about RMB 33)
  • Basic: Cancelled and no longer available for new members, existing members are not affected, $9.99 per month (currently about RMB 55)
  • Standard: $16.49 per month (currently about RMB 91)
  • Premium: $20.99 per month (currently about RMB 115)

Netflix’s strategy is paying off, according to data shared today by analytics firm Antenna. Netflix has averaged 73,000 daily signups in the U.S. since banning users from different addresses from sharing accounts, a 102% increase from the previous 60-day average. On May 26 and 27, Netflix’s daily registered users even approached 100,000, surpassing the peak during the new crown epidemic last year.

Netflix’s policies also resulted in some unsubscribing, but the number of unsubscribing did not exceed the number of new signups. Starting May 23, Netflix saw a 25.6% increase in sign-ups and unsubscribes compared to the previous 60 days, Antenna said.

Netflix said it has seen growth in revenue and user base after password-sharing restrictions were imposed in other countries. Netflix now requires users to identify a primary address and can only use the account within that address. There are certain allowances for travel or second homes, but Netflix now uses IP addresses and other information to limit multifamily use.

Netflix also offers some paid options that allow users to use the service at different addresses. Users can pay an additional $7.99 per month for another person to use the Standard or Premium plan (Standard or Premium), and can add up to two people (premium plan only), each of which can have their own profile, personalized recommendations and password. In addition, Netflix also provides a process to transfer personal data, so that people who previously used Netflix for free can create their own paid accounts.

Netflix currently offers four packages in the United States: $6.99 per month for an advertising package (currently about 50 RMB); $9.99 per month for a basic package without advertising, supporting 720p HD quality and limited to one device for viewing ; The standard package is $15.49 per month, which supports 1080p high-definition picture quality and two devices to watch at the same time; the advanced package is $19.99 per month, which supports 4K ultra-high-definition picture quality and four devices to watch at the same time. It should be noted that although the standard and premium packages allow multiple devices to watch at the same time, Netflix’s new policy requires that all devices must be in the same address.
