According to BusinessKorea, Apple recently released the Vision Pro mixed reality (MR) headset with virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) functions, which is also regarded by the outside world as the next change. Industry pattern of Apple products. Industry insiders predict that, just like the current smartphone competition, the MR track will also be a “confrontation between Apple and anti-Apple groups” in the future.

Industry sources previously revealed that the Android camp, including Samsung Electronics, Google and Qualcomm, is developing MR products and aims to launch them as early as this year. Among them, Google is responsible for the development of MR-specific operating systems, Qualcomm is responsible for the development of MR-specific chipsets, and Samsung will launch MR hardware products.

“We’re excited about our new collaboration with Samsung Electronics in the immersive XR space. We’ll have more to share later this year,” Sameer Samat, Google’s vice president of product management, said at Google’s annual developer conference in May. .” XR (Extended Reality) is the umbrella term for VR, AR and MR.

Samsung filed a trademark application for Galaxy Glasses with the Korean Intellectual Property Office in February this year. Industry insiders have speculated that the shape of Samsung’s XR products is more like ordinary glasses than ski goggles like Apple’s Vision Pro.

It is worth noting that this is also the first time that the Android camp has united for the XR market. In the past, each member of the Android camp chose to go it alone and then gave up on themselves. For example, Google launched the Daydream project in 2016 to develop a VR platform for smartphones but abandoned the plan in 2019. Samsung previously launched a Gear VR headset with Meta subsidiary Oculus in 2014 but has not released a product since.

It was previously reported that market research firm Counterpoint Research expects global MR/XR headset shipments to grow from 18 million units in 2022 to 110 million units in 2025, and reach 1 billion units by 2030.

Samsung Electronics unveiled its next-generation Galaxy S23 series of phones at the Unpacked 2023 event today, where the company also said it will work with Google and Qualcomm on an upcoming mixed reality (XR) platform.

Samsung didn’t mention if it had any specific products in development, nor did it provide a timeline for any upcoming mixed reality products or services. “It’s more of a declarative announcement of how we’re going to try to build the XR ecosystem properly,” said TM Roh, president of Samsung’s mobile division.

Mixed reality is an umbrella term used to describe technologies that combine features of augmented reality and virtual reality. Augmented reality blends the virtual world with the real world by overlaying graphics on the user’s surroundings, similar to Google Glass. In contrast, virtual reality technology, like Meta Quest 2, contains the wearer within a 360-degree virtual world.

Apple is expected to release a mixed reality headset in 2023 that could cost as much as $3,000, according to Bloomberg. Sony’s PlayStation VR 2 and HTC’s Vive XR Elite are both launching this month, while Google teased a new pair of AR glasses at last year’s Google I/O conference aimed at translation, as will Meta’s Quest 3. Come before the end of this year.

Samsung has been relatively quiet on the virtual reality front, aside from its Gear VR headset, which it launched between 2015 and 2017. Consumers are demanding more augmented and virtual reality, Roh said, which is why the company chose to start the new initiative at this time. The company has been working on the category for some time, he said.

Regarding this partnership, Qualcomm said: “Based on our existing cooperation with Samsung and Google, we have meaningful plans to jointly promote the development of the XR experience. With our Snapdragon XR innovation technology-with Samsung’s With great products and Google’s technology – we have the foundation to turn these opportunities into reality and drive the future of the Internet of Space.”

Samsung also confirmed that it is working with Microsoft and Facebook parent company Meta to develop software for the new headset.

HTC recently released a preview of CES 2023 (to be held on January 5 next year), and will launch a flagship-level head-mounted display device for mixed reality. HTC says the new headset is lightweight, compact and powerful.

HTC officially released a warm-up picture that looks like a thickened version of sunglasses. The headset, which should be able to function independently of a phone like an iPhone, would have cameras on the front and sides of the headset, and possibly even a depth sensor.

HTC has announced that the battery life of this headset can reach 2 hours. In addition to easily controlling consumer applications such as games and entertainment applications, it can also handle more complex and demanding applications such as productivity and enterprise tools.

The headset also features color passthrough to make it easier for users to see their surroundings. HTC claims the headset has a higher dynamic range, meaning users can read text without taking the headset off.
