Using Entra ID login Microsoft 365 business and education customers can access OneDrive cloud file storage service, upload and save files, and share them with other colleagues and partners. Microsoft today issued a press release further enhancing the OneDrive Sync synchronization feature.

In a press release, Microsoft introduces new protections to prevent the deletion of OneDrive files you still need on your team.

In real-world work scenarios, where multiple team members have access to shared folders, sometimes other coworkers will delete a file that is still useful to you.

With the latest protections, when someone else on the team deletes a shared file, the user receives a new confirmation dialog and the file is only deleted if everyone on the team agrees.

A single user deleting a file in a shared folder will only remove the shortcut, while the actual file or folder remains available for others to access.

Microsoft has also updated and simplified the Sync Settings menu in File Manager so that the most relevant settings are on the front page, while lesser-used settings are hidden in Advanced Settings or on a secondary page.

According to German media, DrWindows reveals that Microsoft is about to tweak the way it calculates image space usage for albums in OneDrive cloud drives on October 16, which could result in double or multiple space usage.

In an email, Microsoft said that images saved to Gallery and Albums will be calculated differently, meaning that the same image will take up at least twice as much space.

OneDrive’s Gallery will automatically include all photos uploaded to the cloud by the user, so deleting a photo in the Gallery will result in the deletion of the photo in the Album.

After the October 16th effective date, users will be automatically included in the Gallery after uploading images. If the same picture appears in multiple albums, the space consumption of these pictures will be counted multiple times, just after the Gallery is deleted, the album can be unaffected.

Microsoft today announced a major revamp of the OneDrive web version, this revision is mainly for work and study users, some features are similar to the OneDrive consumer version, but most of the new features have not been introduced.

The new OneDrive experience for work and learning starts with the OneDrive home page and encompasses the file experience across Microsoft 365,” Microsoft wrote in the announcement post. It’s a visual and functional upgrade designed to help you access your files quickly and keep your content organized in a variety of ways, without you having to do any organizing. The new features and upgraded design give you faster access to all your personal, shared and team files in OneDrive, resulting in increased productivity.”

The revamped OneDrive home page is already available, but most of the new features are still in development. For example, the “For you” section, similar to the current OneDrive consumer version, will display file recommendations provided by artificial intelligence at the top of the home page view. A new “Share” view will show files you’ve worked on with collaborators; Microsoft says this feature will be available “this quarter. The new People and Meetings views will let you view files in a context-specific way, both of which will be available later this year.

The “Recent” section on the home page now lets users view all files, or by Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or PDF file category. In the future, users will be able to filter the view and then search for specific types of files. Microsoft will also add the ability to change the color of any folder later this year. Files that users have marked as “favorites” in the Microsoft 365 app will appear in a new “favorites” view. Later this year, users will also be able to create shortcut links to files in OneDrive.

For sharing, Microsoft is adopting the unified file-sharing experience used in Microsoft 365, with a clearer “copy link” experience. But this feature won’t arrive until later this year, either.

Microsoft will also bring all of these updates to the OneDrive app in Microsoft Teams by the end of the year.

Perhaps the biggest change has to do with desktop integration: OneDrive Web will “soon” support offline use and will add an “open in app” option for non-Office file types (such as PDFs, images, videos, etc.). This feature will be available “later this year in OneDrive and SharePoint Web Edition, as well as Microsoft Teams.

Microsoft did not mention whether these features will be pushed to OneDrive Consumer Edition but given the shared code base.

Samsung has released an updated version of its Samsung Gallery app for its Android smartphones and tablets. According to the changelog, the latest version of Samsung Gallery (v14.1.01.26) brings better synchronization and fixes some bugs.

Samsung Gallery allows users to sync photos and videos on their devices with Microsoft OneDrive. This means the app can back up photos and videos from the device to OneDrive, just like Google Photos, and display photos and videos previously saved to the cloud service within the app. While this feature has been working properly, Samsung says the new version of the app will offer better syncing capabilities. As a result, users can expect the app’s photo and video sync performance with OneDrive to be better than before.

The changelog also mentions that the update provides fixes for buggy bugs in the app.

The latest Gallery update, go to Galaxy Store Updates and click on the Update All button and the new update may be rolled out in phases. Samsung is working on One UI 5.1 and once the One UI 5.1 update is rolled out on compatible devices, all its built-in apps may get updated.

Microsoft’s OneDrive iOS version recently ushered in the 13.46.2 update, and the update log shows that Microsoft is about to drop support for the OneDrive app on iOS 14 and iPadOS 14. Users are asked to ensure they are using a newer iOS / iPadOS version (15 or 16) to ensure they can still access OneDrive.

Also, to help camera backups perform better, Microsoft has added a reminder not to force-quit the app (swipe up in the app menu). This will enable the app to run in the background and allow OneDrive to continue backing up your local photos.

Microsoft OneDrive can back up, protect, synchronize and access users’ photos and files on all devices. With the OneDrive app, users can view and share OneDrive files, documents, photos, and videos with friends and family. Users can use the app to automatically back up their phone’s photos and videos, start using 5GB of free cloud storage or upgrade to a Microsoft 365 subscription for 1TB of storage.
